So we find ourselves on the verge of history. I’ll Have Another is on the precipice of greatness. But it’s not that easy to win the Triple Crown. Just ask the scores of jockies and trainers who have fallen short of the prize. I haven’t seen the movie Secretariat (have you?) but it might be a good time to check it out. I’ve never been a huge race horsing guy. In fact I once tried to sneak in a cartoon at the Rocky Mountain News about what I consider the animal cruelty aspect of the sport. My editor at the time, a great guy from Paducah, Kentucky, would have no part of it. So it ended up on the cutting room floor. I’m not even sure if I even did any roughs, the discussion didn’t get very far. I seem to remember him uttering the words “Ain’t No Way” ! The closest I ever got the the sport of Horse Racing was going to high school with some jockey…What was his name? Oh, yeah. Some guy named Jerry Bailey. And that’s my name drop of the day. (Never even met him).
