And so it begins…

Today’s cartoon is from this months issue of Mile High Sports magazine…

You want a quarterback controversy, you got a quarterback controversy. Kyle Orton’s performance on Monday Nights loss to the Raiders, brought out the boo birds. For good reason. Orton was 1 for 4 in the red zone and his fourth quarter fumble really cost the Broncos a chance to win. And winning is what it’s all about. It’s the reason why for me, I for one, would rather see Tebow, Quinn, even Adam Weber, a free agent QB the Broncos released just before the season, than to see one more game with Kyle Orton under center for the Broncos. Orton has never cared about winning. Never has, never will. The Broncos need a leader on the offensive side of the ball. Orton is not that leader. Let the controversy begin.

  1. Drew,

Great toon, but I think you are off the mark. I was fortunate enough to go to the game tonight. However, the O line never showed. Fox’s great run-first offense was left in Lot D. The defense while good, was still McDaniels-era porous. Getting to the heart of the matter, with no O-line, Tebow, Quinn, or even Elway could not have done better. I agree that Orton is not a long-term solution, but after tonight this team clearly has more issues than the guy slinging the ball.

  2. good morning from omaha,

pretty strong terms on Orton. doesn’t want to win doesn’t care??? I don’t know if he is the answer or not,but the most popular guy on any football team is the second string quarterback. Orton may not be a jump up and down scream and yell kind of guy but to insinuate that he doesn’t care about winning is harsh.

same thing is happening in KC with cassell but they don’t have an alternative as attractive as tebow. they are stuck with him and are paying him handsomely.

The bronco’s have a lot of problems and orton is just one of many of them. You build a team from the inside out. line play is where it starts. MOreno and Mcgehee haa hahh, whatever, are stalled because the line isn’t moving people around and with practice restrictions built into the new CBA these problems are not going to get solved. IF they can’t block the raiders and create seams and holes what happens when they play a good team from outside their division.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best

  3. Quote from Don Banks on CNNSI.com: When I’m watching Kyle Orton play quarterback, I can’t help but think I’m watching the league’s modern-day Steve DeBerg, who was once aptly described by his head coach, Bill Walsh, as “just good enough to get you beat.’

One of my favorite cartoons from your first book, Drew, was the one where the crowd was chanting “Elway” and Dan Reeves was replying “DeBerg.” Reading that quote, I was struck by how history repeats itself.

  4. The good news is that the Broncos signed Adam Weber to the practice squad. A Minnesota native, and recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, Adam has played with, and thrown to the Broncos own Eric Decker. It would be so cool to see that connection made again on the national level. While I didn’t get to see Monday night’s game, I’ve read enough press to know that no one is happy with Orton as captain of the Broncos ship. I doubt Coach Fox is going to pull him, though; which leaves fans wondering if it is just going to be more of the same ol’ stuff. That being said, one game does not a season make. Back to Eric Decker…what an AWESOME punt return for a TD!!! Other than the stadium-filled singing of our National Anthem, THAT was the highlight for me.
