The Dog Ate it

I’m sure that’s the next excuse for not suiting up for training camp practice. Between the “coaches decision” to sit players, to the iPod music blasting away, it’s hard to tell if the Broncos are at training camp or Club Med. Seriously. I expect Ricky Neuheisel to show up any day now with the inner tubes.

Question of the Day

Are the Broncos getting too soft on their players this year or is this new approach the way to the Super Bowl ? Leave your comments.

  1. That question is hilarious, because our TC this year is at least 10x more physical than any camp Mike Shanahan ran in his entire life. The players are out there going 110% this early in camp, and I would call it smart to rest veterans and players coming off major surgery.

So to answer the (ridiculous) question – no, the Broncos are not going too soft on their players, and perhaps you should research what is taken place at the camp before you jump to such conclusions.

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

I don’t know much about the bronco’s camp but a twitter from the KC star reporter at the chiefs encampment in WISC says the chiefs are showing more intensity, more physicality or dropping more F-bombs but not n that order.

The vets always seem to take a lot a time off OK maybe not a lot but with new coaches and a new system for offense and for defense you would think they would have a lot to learn. the results will start to show in late August and early september, until then don’t go around adopting others peoples problems. I know I have a lot of problems and Todd Haley and Josh McD have a

    pile of their own.

They get paid the big bucks to work the practice attendance out for the team and they will deal with the fall out as the season rolls on.

Last year Herm of the Chiefs ran a practice that resembled Club med and the season turned out like it did, 2-14. We shall see.

Strive for excellence, Nothing but your best.

  3. This is a joke, so I won;t be too harsh, but the fact that some of the players get rewarded by picking out some music to play does NOT make it soft by any stretch. I was at last year’s camp for a week and the players didn’t go full pads ever.

Add the daily ‘special teams’ practices that only included half the team and you really had a Country Club atmosphere.

This year, McDaniels has gone full pads every practice except one. He has the guys tackling to the ground. The only players to be given time off are Brandon Stokely, Brian Dawkins and Correll Buckhalter. The other guys are injured – Wesley Woodyard has a sprained knee, Brandon Marshall tweaked his hamstring.

This camp has been much more intense, and the Broncos have done more hitting in 4 days than in all of last year’s camp.

Again, I know the idea is to be humorous, but to call this camp ‘Club Med’ after the Shanny camps of the past few years is ridiculous!

  4. I think that Allen Iverson said it best “were talkin about? Practice, not the game I die for. What are we talkin bout? Practice!” I dont think most players now think about how hard to work to get a championship ring. Here I go again about the money, no matter how much they play dont play or how long they are injured. Guess what?? THERE STILL GETTING PAID!! HA LOL!! Coach Mac may have a little say in what is goin on but, it all the same ol’ business. But, when it comes time to play they all whine and complain that they are not getting the ball, Im not getting the minutes :..( Whaa! Whaaa! The coach should say in turn at the press confrence “were talkin about,Practice!”

  5. I have not been to training camp this year but from what I have heard is when they get after it, they get after it. But I am worried about the number of practices and implementing the system. This is a “new system” and the learning curve is going to be steep not to mention the chemistry that needs to evolve on defense with all of the new faces. Only having two-a-days every other day would make you believe that the veterans are getting enough time off already and should be good to go for every practice.

I guess McDaniels believes a lot of learning can be accomplished in the meetings (maybe chemistry too). So if veterans miss a practice it is not that big of deal. This is not what we are really use to when Shanahan was here with less intense practices but more situational and everyone being involved because there was less contact.

I think the big frustration is coming from McDaniels and his lack of communication with the media, for the reasons why players are sitting out. Especially in Marshall’s case, I get the feeling part of the injury is real and part of the reason Marshall is not participating is because of his contract. But the story is less of story because other veterans have the day off as well. Maybe this is too much of a conspiracy theory but that’s what you get when McDaniels is so “New England” with all of his answers.

  6. I don’t think McDaniels is going easy on his players. There are only 3-5 players sitting out of 80, they practice with full pads which they NEVER did with Mike Shanahan in 14 seasons and veterans don’t get a practice off every day like they did with Shanahan either.

I have been to training camp each of the last 3 seasons. There is a lot more hitting and hard practicing than in years past. It’s nice to see players hit and take out their frustrations than waiting 3 weeks to do it in the first preseason game.

McDaniel’s does pipe in the music, but I think that’s a matter of a 33 year old coach and not a 57 year old coach running the show.

  7. I am reminded of that Tank McNamara comic strip from a long time ago. An agent is negotiating with the team for a better contract for their holdout quarterback, when the truth is, the quarterback wants his agent to stall until temperatures come down before he can report to camp.
