Catch a Wave and You’re sitting on top of the World

Today’s cartoon can be found in the August edition of Mile High Sports Magazine, now available for free throughout the Denver metro area!
It won’t be long now and college football will be upon us. I used to be a Texas Longhorns fan growing up, because, well, my hometown school UTEP (where I went) was so awful. And I was a huge Freddie Steinmark fan, a Coloradoan who played for Texas back in 68- 69 before losing his life to cancer. And a guy I went to high school with, A Parade All-American named, Lance Taylor, played middle linebacker for the Longhorns back in 77 and 78.
But when I settled in here in Colorado, and the Buffs threw away those horrible pastel blue uniforms they adopted during the Chuckle Fairbanks days and went Back to Black under Bill McCartney it was fun. I even did Buffs football game day t-shirts one season, which was just a blast. They sold them in the bookstore and in the fieldhouse before the games. When Texas refused to let me depict them on a t-shirt in any way, shape, form or fashion, any allegiance I once had for the Longhorns was over. Besides, it’s more exciting watching a an awesome 2 ton Buffalo thundering onto the field vs. an over weight bull named, Bevo, who just stands there looking dumb. So my late wife and I got Buffs tickets, sat with another couple who were, and still are terrific friends, and enjoyed the game in the stands, instead of in the press box. Contrary to popular belief, press boxes are the worst place on the planet to watch a game from. They suck the soul right out of you. Spend a few games watching a game in that atmosphere and you start to watch the game with an “grey poupon” attitude. I got out of them as soon as I could simply because I didn’t want the elitist climate in them to jade me. I draw cartoons for fans, with what I hope is, a fan’s point of view. Much more exposure to press boxes and I know my cartoons would have been different and I didn’t want that to happen. I hated press boxes. Still do.
Anyway, I jumped off the Buffs bandwagon for awhile because the moment they hired Rick Neuheisel I could smell a rat.
I watched with a sense of detachment, and later disgust, during the Gary Barnett era, and began to warm up the first year or so of the Dan Hawkins regime.
Anyway, I’m now all totally on board with the Jon Embree era. I think the new schedule (really, extra brutal this year) will be fun in years to come, and it should allow CU the chance to run a pro set offense a lot more. So here’s to Surfin’. Surfin USA!
Follow Me
This is kind of fun, I will get to see the Buff’s play a time or two now that they are in the PAC12. And, Drew, you get to see ol’ Rick again. He’s a piece of work, but they keep hiring him. Go figure.
Wait a second, is Pullman, WA better than Lincoln? Guess the CA teams make up for the weather in Pullman.
I’d gladly trade LA, Tuscon, Berkeley and Palo Alto for Lubbock, Norman or College Station any day. Plus, you’re no longer stuck in the Kingdom of Austin.
Also: The Girls of the Pac-12 are waaaay better than the Big 12.
Also: I lucked out when covering college football as a sports editor: I usually got the sideline photog passes for Oklahoma, Ok. St and small college games – why sit up in a press box when you can take notes and shoot film only a few feet away from Bob Stoops chewing out a linebacker for missing a tackle?
If you have a boat, you’ll love it at Husky Stadium in Seattle. You can tailgate on your yacht on Lake Washington before docking it to go to the game. You can’t do that at Lincoln or Norman.
Yeah but now we have to deal with Eugene and the awful unis of some Ducks. I still would take College station over the Pacific Northwest
Good Morning from Omaha,
Hey I don’t dislike the buffs at all. the whole Sal Aunese thing made the “rivalry” between the huskers and the buffs ablast. Like everything else in life some on both sides of the stadium got carried away. Unfortunately there will be no more trips to boulder for the huskers and vice versa.
I thought Dan Hawkins would create some magic out there in Denver. His record at Boise St seemed to promise good things for buffs.
I have been following some of articles about Embree and the buffs. The spark plug that tore Nebraska a new one was eric bienemy and guess what..he’s back!!! that 62-36 game set the huskers back for almost 5 years.
If he can transfer some of his intensity to this new batch of buffs, watch out…maybe not this year but in less than 4. I would almost bet my bike on it.
Good luck to the Buffs. They will be my gotta watch team in the pac 12- and kansas is going to be my gotta watch team in the all texas league.
ITs a year of changes on both side of the border and its going to be fun!
Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.
