College Football’s rough ride

top20bullish

Now that’s a Red Bull. Angry, mean and unforgiving, the college football poll system is a bit of a frightening place these days. I love taking scenes like this and making them into cartoon “stages”. I think this one comes from either growing up in Texas or seeing “Urban Cowboy” one too many times. probably a bit of both.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

great cartoon, drew. bcs polls this early don’t really mean much. there is so much parity in college football anymore that most teams have some really great players, most of the players on each team are very good, and there are some good players on each team. the difference in coaching, and getting the most out of the good players and raising the talent bar across the board.

    Coaching is the difference.

Football polls are about as valid as basketball polls. The difference? There’s a PLAYOFF in basketball. Until this happens in football, powerful teams will continue to live on the Little Sisters of the Poor until conference time and the polls will continue to mean nothing. Every basketball team knows they’ve got a chance to make the playoffs, don’t need to blow out inferior opponents to influence pollsters, and one bad night will not keep them away from a chance to play for the crown.

I know I’m dreaming since Corporate America is so linked to the bowl system that it will never happen. Everybody knows it should. The lesser leagues do it now!! There is no excuse for the system we have except greed. When I played College ball, there were about 8 bowls and we played a nine game schedule. Now each team plays 11, many of them meaningless.
