The Cup Belongs to Boston

Here’s another cartoon on the Historic Stanley Cup Victory for Boston. A remarkable win for a remarkable team. seems like all for Vancouver is full of Thugs. Nice way to showcase sportsmanship Canuts fans.

This drawing is a bit of a grand experiment for me. Last nights cartoon featuring the Ride of Paul Revere took me several hours to pencil, ink and colorize. This one, which I think I like better, about 45 minutes if that. It may be time for me to shift the paradigm on how I do sports cartoons. I think the immediacy of getting something up might need to supersede my desire for art that looks more polished. It might be time for me to rethink the whole way I approach the site and the cartoons I do here. Perhaps short and simple and quick is the way to go, basically jumping on every big sports story I can right after it occurs, getting something posted within an hour after it’s finished. It might mean doing several “quick” cartoons a day at times. Just thinking out loud . I sure would love to know what you think, as always.

A brief note on the Zazzle store: for the second time Zazzle has chosen to remove content from my store that they deem a conflict with trademarks of professional sports. I never had any such problem with the Rocky Mountain News nor Chicago Tribune or ESPN.com for that. In any case it means my ability to resell prints on Zazzle might need to be rethought as well.

  1. Drew,

I, personally, like the polished look. Those cartoons possibly show a more introspective perspective. Remember when you commented on my writing back on FB? You, essentially, said the same thing about my writing. That when I write longer passages, it shows the reader more of who I am. I think it is the same reaction I have from your more polished cartoons. That being said, I also like the immediacy of the “rough around the edges” look. I have often thought to myself, “I wonder what Drew is thinking about” a particular event or outcome. Both styles of cartoons are enjoyable, and serve you well. I say continue to draw from your heart….whether polished, or not. (Not that I want you to spend your every waking hour drawing. You need your down time, too. 😉 )

  2. Drew,

I lile this one ok and I understand the desire to save time, but I really liked the Paul Revere version better. I also loved the comments you provided with it. They were spot on.

Just my Susan B. Anthony’s worth.

  3. Drew–

I think that both styles of cartooning work very well in doing what you want to do, which is to express an idea in the most concise way possible (e.g. a picture).

If possible, keep both styles. Each style has different ways of reaching your intended audience. I have enjoyed the immediacy of some of your rough drafts that you have previously published. However, some of the polished cartoons have so many amazing details that it’s fun to check back and see what I missed on first view.

  4. Sometimes a short, quick one-liner says all that needs to be said while other times may need a more thoughtful delivery. Trust your instincts and never rush an artist.
