NFL Schedules without a Season

So it came to my attention (thanks Badger) that today stands for something that I didn’t even know about (4/20).
Since I have spent my lifetime railing against the use of drugs (I’ve never tried them, and never will) I think it’s appropriate for me to strike the “Take a Break day” announcement and post my latest cartoon for United Features. I really posted the “Take A Break” one because I have a bunch of deadlines breathing down my little neck. Working on an illustration for Johnette Howard column on ESPN.com, this cartoon, & the Guadalupe County Communicator. So I was just trying to give myself some breathing room.
For us in Colorado, 4-20-99, will forever be scars on our hearts. We are all Columbine. And they will Never Be Forgotten.

what a sad occasion and how unfitting a way to remember it. I remember where I was when I heard abouit the shooting out at Columbine- and in the last couple of years had the chance to visit the memorial to the slain students and teacher…Its almost as hallowed a place as any national cemetery. The use of water and the natural stone combined with the granite placards that include some of the memories of other in regards to the students and teacher just touches your heart. You don’t have to know the kids/teacher to know how special they were to their fellow students.
As far as 4/20’s other significance…its not even worth mentioning. Life is to beautiful to distort with the use of illegal drugs.
Sorry, but until they are sure there will be a season…neither the owners or the players should get a dime…It called an anticipatory breach and it means just what it says…There is no guarantee there will be a season and so everything that could be spent on season tickets, tickets licenses and even parking should be put into a separate account and held in lieu of a season(and away from the owners/players/league)……Greed is gong to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.
Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

I find it kind of funny that as soon as the schedules for the NFL season were announced, football fans were giddy with excitement about the possibility that there actually might be a football season to follow. The first person I ran into at work this morning is as avid and dedicated to his Raiders, as we are to our Broncos. Before I could even get a “good morning” out, he was talking trash about how “the Raiders are going to score another 58 points at Mile High”, etc. I immediately pointed out that IF there is going to be a season, he better prepare to lose. (Had to give it back, though mildly, of course.) I do commend the Bronco leadership (Elway, Bowlen, Fox, et al.) for reaching out to season ticket holders via conference calls, to hear from the fans. It does say a lot about the Bronco organization, and their recognition that Bronco Nation doesn’t exist without the fans.
Columbine…twelve years ago. Wow. I will never forget that day. That something so horrific and tragic happened at a high school in Colorado, is something I still find unfathomable. The reality is that it did happen. Lives were lost. Lives were changed. Forever. My heart and prayers go out to the families of those who lost their lives on that day – including the Harris and Klebold families. I can only hope that all of their deaths will never be in vain – that we will always strive to do better when it comes to recognizing changes (in behaviors, patterns of activity, associations with others, etc.) in people – as well as, in our response to reaching out to, or getting help for, someone in need. We can’t stand on the sidelines any longer, if we want to prevent this from happening again. It is no irony that the school’s name is Columbine. Think about the flower…a strong, yet tender beauty, whose nectar is sweet like honey. Resilient – like the state of Colorado and her people. Dear God, please continue to grant eternal rest to those who died on this day, twelve years ago. May your perpetual light shine upon them forever. Bless their families with your peace and hold them in your loving arms.

Drew –
There’s nothing wrong with taking a break yesterday, regardless of the coincidences. You don’t strike me as a stoner, and nor am I (although I do support legalization…but that’s a discussion for other websites).
As for today’s toon, it literally cracked me up! NFL team gouging is on the money – although based upon the the fans I’ve run here out east, no owner has anything on Dan Snyder, the man behind Washington’s single-handed attempt to make the XFL look competent.
For a great look into his iniquity, check out this site: it’s from the DC City Paper (The Beltway version of Westword, for you Denver folk): http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/40063/the-cranky-redskins-fans-guide-to-dan-snyder
Dan was so impressed by it, he’s suing the Paper for libel, which should anger those of us who value the First Amendment.
I think the part about fork over your money is highly accurate. Season ticket holders for most teams were forced to decide by February whether or not they wanted to renew their tickets. Granted, they will get a refund if games are missed, but the teams are sitting on that money collecting interest for themselves in the meantime. I think if the NFL isn’t careful, they will end up biting off more than they can chew. If games are missed, fans will get upset, and many will turn to other endeavors. It will be a boon for college sports, MLB, and the NHL. It could be a bigger boon than that for other industries as fans find other ways to spend their disposable income. Many of these fans may choose to never come back. If the NFL is smart they will resolve this before games are missed. Than again, both sides may be just arrogant enough to think it won’t matter.
And on the plus side, yesterday was a full sports day, even without the NFL: NBA and NHL playoffs (including playoff Hockey Overtime, the mostest funnest thing ever), full slate of Baseball (The Dodgers are now Wards of the State…and what has come over the Cleveland Indians?). Even my game soccer: The North London rivarly game between Tottenham and Arsenal (6 goals!) and don’t look now, but Real Salt Lake is 90 minutes from winning the North American club championship – a first for an American team.
