A day at the Races

My most recent ESPN.com cartoon. I had a lot of fun with this drawing. It’s one of those that had a “high degree of difficulty”. Hope ya like it.

  1. It is quite effective as usual. When I saw the title my mind went to the old Marx brothers comedy so it took me a minute. It has a bit more of a Ben Hur flavor.

  2. Drew,

I love all the detail!!! I can’t begin to imagine how long it took you to draw and color your cartoon. VCU and Butler are definitely the “Cinderella” story of the NCAAs. It will be fun to see who gets the final dance at the “ball.” 😉

In all honesty, I’m more excited for the NITs this weekend. I have it on good authority (cousin works in the AD office…lol) that the Buffs are ready to play some championship ball! Go Buffs!!!! 🙂

  3. Peg, I did 6 rough drafts before I stared drawing it. So I was warmed up. The horses went pretty well, but those mice were a challenge. It took about 5 hours total drawing and coloring time. I draw digitally now which makes it easier to change and erase things. If I had done this on illustration board, add 2 hours. Glad you liked it. I had great fun with it. Crawling into bed at 4 am and getting a 7:30 wake up call from my editor at ESPN to change the color of the VCU uniform, not so much.

  4. This one is a keeper!! Love the detail and the Ben Hur/Cinderella references. Good stuff!!!

  5. Dear Drew,

Like Dave DeLuca when I first saw the headline my first thought was that this was going to be a Marx Brothers cartoon. While the drawing was downloading I tried to think which Marx Brother would represent which Brother? VCU was the easiest to me. They were Zeppo. What too many people think of as the “extra Marx Brother”.

At first I thought Butler would be Harpo but two years they’ve schemed their way to the final four. Definatly a Chico trait.

Because UConn’s women’s team seems to get more press the men’s team by comparison are winning quietly. Quiet like Harpo.

Only by default did that leave Kentuky as Groucho. Now they’re hoping to say the “Secret Woid” and win the NCAA (You bet your life).

Of course when I saw the cartoon I busted a gut. Kentucky and UConn better not cancel each other out of the race otherwise Butler or VCU will come from behind and win.

    All the best

  6. This is for Gene from Omaha,

As I recall you stated you love pro wrestling. Are you ready for Wrestlemania 27 this weekend? Are there any matches you’re especially pumped up for?

For me while many matches look good (except for the one involve “Snooki” and Vickie Guerrero) I’m most psyched for Undertaker vs HHH. Funniest match should be Jerry “The King” Lawler vs Michael Cole given that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will ref it. The title matches look solid though not too exciting for me.

Anyway I wonder what your thoughts are (provided you are the one who said they loved wrestling)?

    All the best

  7. Good Morning from Omaha,

Great Idea behind the cartoon and the follow through shows all that thought. Love it. Its nice to hear the creative process, the six “practice” drawings, that went into the final product. I would like to see Butler win it all but after this last couple of weeks who can tell.

now for some wrestling talk…I would think that lawler will get his revenge on cole and that during the match stone cold will drop swagger off the edge of the ring. cena and miz rable might be good. and I think edge and del rio will be good. del rio needs a lift as the bad guy. HHH and the Undertaker doesn’t do much for me, Its like two old dinosaurs battling. Both have had better days. Its like a nod to the old guys who watch.don’t forget it starts early, 6 here on the plains and 5 out there in the mountains.

  8. Really like this one. It reminds me of your “two ships passing in the night”, which is one of my favorites.

  9. If UConn wins the men and women’s championship, draw Maya Moore and Geno Auriemma hogging the spotlight from Kemba Walker and Jim Calhoun.

  10. Gene and Louis,

Back in my days at the Rocky I was given only one rule. Never, ever draw a pro wresting cartoon. Maybe I should now. Ha,ha. Freedom. I love it.

True story. My best friend from childhood was obsessed with pro wrestling. So much so that he wanted to grow up and become a professional wrestler. I remember him tape recording himself announcing at ringside. I still have the tape around somewhere. His name is Tom Prichard, known around the sport today as Dr. Tom. Here’s a link to his bio.

  11. Drew–

Absolutely amazing cartoon today. I’m sure I missed some details even after checking it out a few times! Great layout on it, too.

  12. GMFO-

you have to appeal to your audience and ‘rasslin’ in a very slender market. Usually adolescents and guys, like me who don’t want to grow up. they call it sports entertainment and while the characters are athletes of a sort, and work really hard to put on a good show, so did charlie sheen, alan alda, the guys from barney miller and even the cast of dallas.

Dr tom pritchard is a name from the past but its a unique perception you have of him. Please don’t offend your public with anything to do with rasslin’ unless it involves the real stuff!

strive for excellence, nothing but your best.
