A Tangled Web They Weave

It indeed is a tangled web the BCS and the archaic bowl system have weaved. They continue to entrap College Football Playoff hopes for all of us because of greed and short sightedness. Then again, with all the scandals involved in the NCAA these days, maybe it’s better left alone. Imagine the illegal chaos that would ensue if they did have a real playoff system. Yikes.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

the chances of there being a play off in college football are about the same as me not eating any turkey tomorrow. the ncaa has sold it soul to the highest bidder, but it has developed a rot from the inside. There are way too many incidents of things being out of control what with penn state, usc, alabama, miami and the list goes on for this car to stay on the road much longer. You can only paper over this mess for so long. If DII and D III can have playoffs and seemingly not have problems with the student/athlete missing school why can’t the bigger schools? Most of the schools that would be involved in the playoffs are on winter break so what classes would the teams miss. and really since when did the NCAA care about the student? Its all about the money anyway.

enough of the rant- I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. Its truly a family holiday and I hope every one gets to spend this weekend with their families.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Dear Drew,

First of all an early Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Now to me it won’t matter if we go BCS or playoffs someone will find a way to complain if their team isn’t selected.

    All the best

  3. Change is coming, and coming hard, to college sports. There is just too much money in college football and basketball and too little of it going to the labor end of it. Yes, the kids get a college education, but are banned from any case awards/grants that most average students are entitled to. Megaconferences will only partially address some of the problems and also end up creating new ones. And the main reason we watch sports – fair athletic competition – is even being ignored.

But since we’re talking about BCS solutions? Keep the ranking system/computers, and have and 8-team playoff with the top-rated conference champions only.

Related note: yesterday, in the European Champions League, Apoel – a team from tiny Cyprus – qualified for the playoff round over several giants from England, Spain and Germany. If the NCAA was in charge, they’d have been voted out. However, that’s what happens when you let the play on the field decide who the best is.
