Avalanche!

Uncategorized

To say the Avalanche are headed downhill would be an understatement. They’ve lost 15 of their last 16 games with no end in site. We haven’t seen a collapse like this since Charlie Sheen a week ago. It’s ugly hockey, the Avs giving up goals the way Josh McDaniel’s used to give up draft picks. Lots. And often. We are a week away from Tournament picks. Baseball is in it’s early spring schedule, and nobody but Los Angeles and Boston care about the NBA. The NFL is still arguing amongst themselves and NASCAR, well…it’s not the Daytona 500, OK. This is the one week of the year I refer to as the doldrums. The winds are calm and the sails are just laying there. So, let’s just say this week could bring some pretty crazy cartoon ideas. Sounds like fun to me!

  1. The Charlie Sheen and Josh McDaniel illustrations are so insightful. This time of year is when Sports Illustrated decides to illustrate other sports “so to speak”, so they have sought to eliminate the “doldrums” but have probably created a lot of consternation in households. You seem to have enough moral fiber to take that one on.

  2. Dear Drew,

Is there something in the Colorado air that is causing our teams to choke? I mean the Ave’s now. The C.U. Buffalo’s v s Iowa State last week, The Bronco’s. It reminds me of a line from M*A*S*H* from their final episode where Hawkeye say’s,”Surgery use to be like falling off a log. Now its like falling off a cliff.” Watching the Ave’s is like that. They’re falling off a cliff like they’re Wile E. Coyote clones.

I’ve also got some thoughts on a few other things I’d like to get off my chest if you don’t mind.

Miami Heat – All that money they spent on their big three yet none of them seem to know how hit the clutch shot when the game is on the line. It’s like if they can blow a team out they’re the Harlem Globetrotters. Keep the game close and have a lead late in the game and they turn into the Washington Generals.

The BYU player suspenstion – There is an irony to this story especailly with the recent BYU loss. How many years do we complain that schools turn a blind eye to player’s indescretions. Now there is a school who does stand on its principals and fans are having hissyfits about it. Now this player may not have done things like steal from a store or do drugs. In fact the offenses here look to be pretty minor by comparison. Still it is refreshing to see a college that stands by its morals instead of just letting it slide.

Duke vs North Carolina – One of the reasons I still like college basketball. The NCAA tournament (including the conference tournaments) being another.

NFL contract negotiations – I’m starting to wonder if Vegas will start taking wagers on which will happen first. The NFL vs unions coming to an agreement or if Washington D.C. will get a new budget sign. Maybe Las Vegas can take bets and place odds on which will happen first.

Not sports related but have to say it. Last week I saw my first sure sign that spring is here or at least close enough. I saw my first teenaged girl wearing a pair of “Daisy Dukes”.

    All the best

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

It is certainly the doldrums of sports..I mean yesterday TBS showed the original version of the longest yard and I actually watched it. Its better than the Alan sadler remake but for its time, 1974, was funny. It was the first movie my now wife and I went to see.

I saw the charlie sheen skit on SNL- it had its good parts and at times was funny but the whole charlie sheen thing seems sad but maybe that is the life he has alway led and has now gone public with it.

Don’t know if the NFL guys are going to settle things out but Kliss in the post hopes they don’t so he doesn’t have to cover OTA’s and two a days for the bronco’s. Seems kind of selfish on his part but I guess we all have our reasons for doing things.

I re read some of my rants last week and think I got a little preachy about the exercise thing…Sorry about that guys . I know how I relieve stress and cure boredom and no it doesn’t work for everyone. In the meantime the rockies are playing spring ball and even the KC Slayor have won a game or two. and there is always HGTV and the DIY network.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  4. Drew–

No comments at all about sports today, sorry.

I had an odd but sort of amusing thought over the weekend. Have you considered something with “Drew’s Crew” and your rhino mascot on it, like a mug? That could spice up the morning’s coffee or other caffeinated beverage of choice!

  5. I actually was able to catch the 3rd period of the game while over at my sister’s. I simply could not believe what I was seeing. The first thought I had upon seeing the Avs on the ice was: “Wow, do they look desperate!” The 2nd thought was that there wasn’t too much teamwork going on; and the third thought was “when do the Rockies play next?” – and I’m not that much of a baseball fan!!! The fact that the Avs are 2nd from the bottom in the conference (above the team who whopped them yesterday), after having such a promising start at the beginning of the season, is disheartening – to say the least.

  6. Dave,

I’ve done a few of those sports illustrated ones in the past. There’s always good fodder there. I find the whole thing ridiculous. It’s a sports magazine. But it sells, probably more than any other issue they do all year.

Hey, I might be headed your way come early summer. Doing some research that might take me to your great state. We must have coffee or lobsters or chowder or something while I’m there.

  7. Louis,

Great stuff today. Reads like a column. Thanks for the insight. And some good topics for me to keep in mind for this week.

  8. Gene,

You didn’t get too preachy about anything. So often times we live our lives in our own little bubbles. It’s good to have someone to remind us that there is a great big beautiful world out there. If we all got out in it a bit more, walking, or sailing or star gazing, it all reminds us there is an incredible universe to stand in awe of.

And I loved the Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds.

  9. Felicia,

Thanks for the great idea. I’m in the process of putting some t-shirt designs together for baseball season. I’ll add the Rhino idea to the mix. And you get a free mug for suggesting it, hows that!

  10. Peg, I so agree with you. It’s somewhat perplexing. Don’t be too surprised if we see a coaching change and the name Patrick Roy as the #1 candidate for the job.

I’m actually really looking forward to baseball. I’m finishing my first Rockies magazine cartoon for the season tomorrow. And I’m not a big baseball fan either. I didn’t grow up watching it

  11. Hey Everybody,

Louis “column” he wrote today in our comments is quite good. Take a look at it if you have time.

  12. Drew,

Patrick Roy as coach? I would love that! Do you remember your cartoon of him in the net with him “seeing” the Stanley Cup in both of his eyes? I think he would be a great coach for the Avs. Especially as Sakic is busy coaching his sons. lol

As far as baseball goes – me too, Drew. One of the television stations here in the Twin Cities posted a picture they took of home plate at Target Field…there is actually green grass growing! Definitely a sign of spring!!! Especially with more snow expected tonight and later this week. It is so hard NOT to jump on the Twins bandwagon. They are a great organization (front office, owners, and players) with a lot of heart for the game and love for their community. Look for exciting things this season!

@ Louis: I loved your post. The M*A*S*H analogy for the Avs was perfect, and I agree with your comments about the situation at BYU.
