Today you’ll hear all about Stephen Strasburg, the phenom pitcher sure to go to the Washington Nationals with the first pick in the MLB draft. You’ll hear details about his agent, the notorious Scott Boras and how he plans to wrangle away a $50 million contract for a kid who hasn’t thrown a pitch in the majors (or minors for that matter). This is just my depiction of one small pest (Boras) who wrecks havoc in a big way.

Thanks for the feedback on At the Crossroads: Part 1 Your words of encouragement and your great ideas and input have been most welcome. Mostly I’m glad that some of you shared your own experience with life at the crossroads. I’ll be back here tomorrow with some more thoughts and cartoons.

  1. good morning from Omaha,

I was watching Mike and Mike this morning and they were talking about the baseball draft. I guess, according to them, the Nationals can’t even trade out of the#1 pick. If the yankee’s wanted to get the pick they couldn’t and thats the MLB rule. So they have to take the pick and even if they don’t sign him, they have a year, they get the first pick next year or something like that.

Scott Boras tries to get the most for his players and in turn himself. Boras makes a mess of everything. Some teams just don’t draft players that he represents just to avoid him and his ability to sink a teams ship money wise.

Better move on, Strive for excellence, Nothing but your best.

  2. This is a classic case here of, “Bust or not to Bust” that is the question? A kid earning um.. excuse me TAKING money from an organization, he has not even thrown a pitch. Geez if I would have kwown then what is present now, I be a star in High School. I would gladly take millions to let an organization down (depending on how much the kid actually LOVES the game, and not many do). I am sorry….no im not sorry I would take no shame and earn millions to suck and not get hurt, help my family, and live off the intrest. Gold digger, yep! If an organization is stupid enough to give me millions just because I could be a prospect then its their own fault! Teams need to let the kids earn their money after like a three year period. Games would be more competitive then they already are because(lets be honest) the begining and middle of the baseball season is simply a snoozer. Even though he did not play baseball I only have two words to close, Ryan Leaf. Need I say more?

Keep pluggin away Drew, demand compenstion for your drawings from 9 News. I am alittle pissed off that they do not pay you, I belive instead of playin “Drews Clues” (a small pot shot) at the 10’clock news place you in for a little “Win,Lose, or Drew- Live” is 9 News that shallow not to let you show your drawings in person. Oh, please dont tell me that there is not enough face time for two Drews. Go to FOX, or somewhere you will be appreciated. Nice guys finish last!! You can do it Drew!!! Prove this town wrong!

  3. Matty,

Don’t be angry with 9News. Their employees have been asked to take concessions on salary, take unpaid furloughs, cutback on travel and newsroom expenditures. These are very tough times. Everybody is tapped out and no one is spending. The thing that makes me a little concerned is that some feel this economy might not begin to turn around until 2012 and it could be as late as 2015 before we see tangible results. The government has not used the “d” word for fear of causing a nationwide panic. But we are pretty much in a depression the likes of which we have not seen since 1929. It’s that bad.

  4. $50 million starting wage while the common fan can not afford season tickets. Something has got to give, and I doubt that folks will give up their lunch money to watch a 19 year old throw a ball, no matter how well he throws it. Well, at least I hope that is what happens because the alternative is that pro sports will only be watched by the mega rich.

But I gotta ask you guys (and gals) what you all think about the Bronco’s selling advertising space on their uniforms? I can just see it now; The Barley soda Broncos, the Trojan Titans, the Nesely Bar Nuggets, the Rocky Road Rockies, the …

  5. Jac, the advertising space is on practice uniforms. Like Allen Iverson once said, it’s practice, we’re talking about practice. Could it lead to something down the road? Potentially, but it’s not like we see the practice unis a ton. The bigger worry should be the WNBA, specifically the Phoenix Mercury, who sold advertising rights on their actual uniforms.

Drew, I think that this coming off season is going to be very humbling for the MLB. Its only a matter of time before players become so expensive that they aren’t worth keeping around.

All media at this point is struggling. All students at this point want to be involved in the broadcast field because they get face time. High demand= lower compensation. Meanwhile, the print field is struggling big time (duh) so nobody wants to be a part of it. It’s a tough day to work in media, but I think eventually we’ll get it figured out.
