Dispatches from the Drawing Board

  • This cartoon was drawn for the Boulder Daily Camera and the BuffZone.com.
  • Check out the BuffZone’s fantastic fantastic coverage of the Buffs big victory
  • I love the emergence of the CU Basketball program. Long considered a doormat of the Big 12, it’s fantastic to see what Tad Boyle is doing with the program. It’s been a long time since CU hoops have been to the dance. Now’s their chance to prove themselves on a bigger stage!
  • Quite a weekend of sports around Colorado this weekend. From Tebow, to Manning to CU’s revenge tour it’s been a fun one.
  • That said it’s been a busy one for me. Friday alone was crazy. In theΒ  morning I drew roughs for the Chicago Tribune. In the afternoon I ventured across town to Monroe Elementary school to teach some of the greatest kids in the world the art of cartooning for ArtReach. It’s such a joy to see the happiness in the smile of a child. I took my Cintiq tablet with me to show the kids how I draw digitally these days and, since the class ends at 4:30, and if I got tied up in traffic, I could pull into a Starbucks and meet my two remaining deadlines for The Tribune and 9News. So I ended up cranking out my two cartoons in the Starbucks at Aspen Grove, and, thanks to a very kind crew at Starbucks, I was able to hang out after they closed the doors at 9:00 so I could finish. After that it was on to Chammps to grab a bite to eat and catch the first half of the Buffs PAC 12 Semi-final game. Sleep came late, as it always does.
  • I’m tired just typing it.
  • So I’ll likely take a day or two off mid-week to start the process of getting the house ready to sell and a quick trip up to Boulder with my cartoonist pal, Rich Moyer, for Buffalo wings and a stop at Time Warp Comics. I need my comic shop fix. πŸ™‚

  1. I’m tired just thinking about all that you’ve done in the past few days, Drew! How fortunate those young children are to learn from you, the art of cartooning. I have no doubt you made a strong impression on the children. Who knows? There may be one or two budding, young cartoonists at Monroe Elementary! πŸ™‚

It has been a crazy and exciting week for Colorado sports fans, like you said. I read an article today that said the Jacksonville Jaguars would take Tebow in a heartbeat, if the Broncos and Manning came to an agreement. Should that happen, I will follow, as I always have, Tim Tebow – the person, even if he isn’t wearing Bronco Orange and Blue.

Here in Minnesota, the State Boys Hockey Championships were held this week. A small, Catholic school, Benilde-St. Margaret won their class – with one young man scoring all five goals! The is a team that was un-seeded in the rankings; yet they were number one on all of the hearts in Minnesota, because of one young man named, Jack Jablonski. Jabs, as he is called by all who love him, is a sophomore hockey player, who was paralyzed earlier in the season because of a bad hit from behind. He is now, a quadriplegic, learning to live in his new body as he continues to stengthen and recuperate, through out-patient rehabilitation. If you want to be inspired, this story will do it!

Anxious to see what the NCAA Selection Committee does with their placement of the Buffs, and what the Broncos do with Manning. Your cartoons this week have been AWESOME!!!!! πŸ™‚

Enjoy your time in Boulder – you deserve it!

  2. Dear Drew,

Great cartoon. After seeing the reposting of last years “screw job” I had an image in my head similar to yours. Only this time the screw had been removed and a threatening looking Ralphie would hint where the NCAA bracket committe can put it.

Still a bit surprised that even with a Pac-12 title automatic bid Colorado still couldn’t get any respect. An 11 seed????? The same seeding as Colorado State (who I’m glad got included too). Not even 8th seed or higher? As Elmer Fudd would say “Dere’s someting swewy going on around here.

Good luck with the house selling and the move.

    All the best

    Louis

  3. Good Morning form Omaha,

How about the buffs and the rams making the big dance!

How did this happen? they are playing some good basketball out there in colorado. I don’t worry about the seeding. as al davis used to say “just win baby”

its going to snow in July before Nebraska makes the tournament. funny but a couple of kids from Nebraska play for CSU. I guess they were not good enough to okay for coach doc and the big read.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  4. Re-draw the “Colorado got screwed” cartoon, except this time, make the victim a Washington Husky – because the Pac-12 regular season champion really did get screwed.
