CSU Baffles Buffs

On my grill for Labor Day. CROW.

I was a very outspoken 2 years ago when CSU hired Steve Fairchild. It wasn’t necessarily about him, but more about the way that CSU pushed Sonny Lubick out the door. Regardless, I will be eating crow today. Lots of it.

CSU, out-classed, out-played, out-coached, out-executed, out-ran, out-hit and clearly out-recruited the Colorado Buffaloes on Sunday night. Dan Hawkins, not one time, ever looked as if he even knew there was a game being played on Sunday night, and his son, Cody, wasn’t much better. But Cody can’t be blamed for a team that exhibited a complete lack of preparation. CU didn’t play at all like stoic Buffaloes but instead cowered more like deer in headlights. Please feel free to comment away about the game. For, me I apologize to those fans of Ram nation. Clearly I was wrong as to who made the better hire as their head coach. Now, does crow go OK with Tabasco sauce?

Should the Buffs begin the coaching Search?

  1. Drew,

It was classless on how CSU pushed out Sonny Lubick but it happens. Don’t apologize for it. It’s hard to push out legends past their prime. Read the sports book “Boys Will Be Boys” about Tom Landry getting pushed out and you’ll get the picture. I think more people were upset on how the AD reacted to the media and the Dave Logan insult. The AD didn’t respect the market he was walking into. It is nice to see the program move on with Steve Fairchild. Obviously, at this point, he was underrated. I had hopes for Coach Hawk but he has to let go of his undersized son. I believe it’s like Eric Lacroix in the locker room all over again. Another question for CU, where was Darnell Scott?

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

As my son the football coach and recent CSU alum would say, “if you have two quarterbacks you have none.

Hawkins has now set himself up for an incredibly difficult climb the rest of the season.

    Go Rams

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  3. If crow tastes good with tabasco sauce, please let me know as I will be eating it as well. As long as Dan Hawkins insists on nepotism and playing Cody, the buffs are looking at another losing season. Cody is too short to see over the offensive and defensive line, and his passes get tipped too many times. I am a CU alumni and remember the early 80’s and don’t really want to relive them.

  4. As a CU Alum, I have to say that last night was embarrassing – the first half in particular. How Hawkins still has a job as coach is anyone’s guess – his record after 4 seasons is dismal at best. This season looks to be a continuation of that. Simply put: the man needs to go!

Props to the CSU program for bringing it last night. These games are always entertaining. As fun as it was to see Folsom I think the games should go back and forth between the two teams where the stadium is concerned.

Anyway, another great ‘toon. I will be enjoying my crow with a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce.

  5. Perfect toon, Drew.

You don’t have to eat the whole crow. Fifth-year senior Grant Stucker was a Lubick recruit after all.

Fairchild v. Hawkins, though, was absolutely no contest. I’m looking forward to seeing how CSU fares against BYU.

  6. I have been an advocate for Dan Hawkins from day one. I’ve liked his philosophy of teaching kids life skills (except for his Division 1-A rant) along with the football stuff. That said, the football stuff has to be working. Last night, Hawkins totally baffled me. How a head coach can stand on the sidelines after one of his kids (McKnight) is practically maimed with a blatant and premeditated helmet to helmet cheapshot to the head, is beyond me. If I’m Hawkins, I’m in the middle of the field screaming at a referree that somebody should be thrown out of the game for that, even if it ends up being me. In the NFL that hit gets you a 4 game suspension and a fair sized fine. Hawkins just stood there. No emotion. No anything. Players read that as, well, if he isn’t going to fight for us when we somebody gets away with a cheap shot, what’s the point of putting out the effort. I thought Hawkins was the guy. Now, I’m having very serious doubts.

And I’m equally as baffled as to why Darrell Scott and Hansen are sitting on the bench. Clearly, I was as far off base in believing Hawkins was the guy as I was in believing Fairchild wasn’t. I used to be a pretty good judge of stuff like that. I smelled Neuheisel out as a rat the day he took the job. McDaniels, the same thing. Help! My rat senses are fading!

  7. I was also critical of the Lubbick firing at the time for emotional reasons. But in hindsight I realize that we knew nothing of what was going on behind the scenes. It was possibly a very complicated picture. Also with the benefit of hindsight it is now easier to see how the Rams were heading down rapidly with no real plan to reverse that momentum. Sometimes people don’t know the exact right time to retire.

  8. Geez. I did not intend to do the final post on this. I will change the subject and make a bold prediction and if I am wrong I will eat crow. Based on what we saw last night the Buffs will not be an average team this year. We will know within the next few weeks whether they will get a whole lot better or a whole lot worse. Definitely not average. Where were those running backs for gosh sakes.

  9. Yay CSU, this is the year the MWC gains full respectabillity and hopefully an automatic bowl bid. Death to the BCS. Also Air Force won by 70 and BYU beat Oklahoma, just to further my point.
