Thoughts and Musings for Monday

If you missed the weekends announcement that I posted Friday night, here’s a recap. We are in the process of putting together the first ever Drew Litton wall calendar. We’ll have more updates as they become available. They will be out in plenty of time for early Holiday shopping. I’m excited about this project as it’s one of the first real attempts at merchandising here at DrewLitton.com.

Another item of interest. Sunday’s edition of the Denver Post featured an article on Chris “The Birdman” Andersen. In the article there is a reference to some Arby’s glasses that will be coming out soon. I can’t say much but I might have had a bit of involvement in that project. There’s a set of 3 glasses total and I really think you’re going to go all Birdman over them.

I’m also beginning to make serious in roads on a couple of things. First, are all of the caption contest mailings. All of the winners prizes went in the mail on Friday, and I’ll have the rest of the runner-ups prizes in the mail by Wednesday. I’m working diligently on the first chapter of Cartooning 101: How to Act Like a sponge: A primer on capturing an idea, smacking it on the head and caging the little sucker. All while keeping your sanity. And the last, but not least, I’m making progress on a web comic/ graphic novel I’ve been toying with. It will be vastly different then anything you’ve seen me do in the past. I’m excited about branching out a bit and doing a wide variety of new content, so please stay tooned. And feel free to let your friends know about this blog. The more the merrier.

  1. Drew,

Congratulations on making the leap to profitability. It has been a wonderful opportunity to hear about your experiences and challenges from starting over after the RMN to running your own business. Thank you for sharing it with us.

In my dark times I draw hope and courage from your story. Keep up the struggle.

I’m glad you resolved my Christmas shopping quandry. The wife has been asking for new glassware for a while…

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

Wow, it sounds like you have found a way to make a day 25 hours long. and be successful as the same time doing what you love to “drew”. its a pun.

Love the cartoon. there will never be instant replay in baseball, the power that be feel that it would make the games too long.

Humans make mistakes and as long as we are human that will continue.

as a side note, I want to wish my sister in Dallas a Happy 50th birthday. OH wait I am not to tell her she is 50.

Maybe Drew might consider getting into cards like the guy from the far side did a long time ago. I don’t know if there is any money in cards, unless the sender puts it in them, but it might be another opportunity to create some cash flow with Drews vast library of evergreeen cartoons.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  3. Really excited about the calendar. The Father’s Day toon was a big hit for my husband, father and brother. So I can’t wait to order up abunch of calendars. Also very excited about the Birdman glassware. We are fast food glassware collectors. My boys call them our “fine crystal” so we will be looking forward to the release. Just wanted to Thank you for continuing to share your talent with us. I do have to credit you, Drew – for my boys being newpaper readers, they started looking at your toons when they were just little kids and went on the reading the paper daily as they got older. So Thanks!!!!!!! and keep the toons coming.

  4. Hey Mike,

Thanks for the comment and words of encouragement. I’m making some progress on making the website into more of what I envision as a business plan for what I’m calling the Comicsprenuers of the future. As print business models continue to struggle, the key to the cartoonists survival will now rest squarely on their own shoulders. Monetizing their own content is challenging but overall rewarding because the only person you have to answer to is yourself and your readers. No editors, no creative interference. It’s liberating yet at the same time a little scary. But overall it’s exciting the possibilities that are out there.

  5. Gene,

You are one truly incredible guy. It is so wonderful to have you here, day in and day out bringing words of encouragement and insight. It does seem like it is 25 hours a day, and I’ve not even really begun the climb out of the bottom of this inkwell I find myself in. I’ll be looking into cards as well. Thanks for the advice.

  6. Cindy,

What a really warm and wonderful comment. It makes me really glad to know that your kids were encouraged to read because of the comics. Comics are so valuable in the newspaper. Unfortunately so few of them really understand the impact they have on readers, particularly young readers.

Happy to hear as well, that you are looking forward to calendars and glassware. As soon as we get some more details I’ll post it right away.

  7. congrats on the calendar Drew, glad to see you’re doing well

how ’bout a cartoon for the Avs red hot start?

  8. About the umps: when in doubt, call it a strike. Games will go much quicker that way, maybe even end before Halloween (or the first snow).

  9. Travis,

Thanks for note on the calendars. Being a Comicsprenuer has its challenges. I’ll work on an Avs toon sometime soon.

  10. George,

That’s one of the problems I have with baseball and basketball for that matter. The seasons are just too long. It’s just wrong to be playing the World Series in November. One of these days baseball will be sorry it keeps pushing it back. I mean when the World Series comes on right after Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, something is just a bit weird.
