From Gehrig to Gleason: Time to beat ALS

Uncategorized

Steve Gleason is infamous in New Orleans. Just 2 and a half minutes into The Saints first game back home in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, Gleason blocked a punt that the Saints recovered for a touchdown. It’s known as the single most important play in Saints history because it expressed a cities hope after the massive devastation of Katrina and it began an era of winning football for a franchise, long known as the Aint’s, a doormat team in the an NFL. Gleason was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in January. New York Yankees slugger Lou Gehrig was its first prominent victim, dying at age 37 just two years after his 1939 diagnosis. Gleason has started a foundation to fight this hideous disease. Join me and Team Gleason to find a cure. 1. Drew,

Of all the things you could have drawn for today you chose to draw this. Thank you. The admiration and appreciation I have for Steve are for how he lived his life before his diagnosis. Certainly how he approaches the current and future difficulties is inspiring, but I believe his life prior to diagnosis is equally so. His pursuit of a dream to play football at the highest level, his sense of self, and his commitment to service offer all of us the opportunity to examine what is truly important in life.

Thank you for the toon and for the links to the articles about Steve. May Team Gleason continue as a positive tool in the fight against this most insidious disease.

    1. having an extremely bad reputation: an infamous city.

    2. deserving of or causing an evil reputation; shamefully malign; detestable: an infamous deed.

    a. deprived of certain rights as a citizen, as a consequence of conviction of certain offenses.

    b. of or pertaining to offenses involving such deprivation.

I believe you meant to say “famous.”

Good cartoon and good idea to call attention to this worthy cause.

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

another classic. ALS is a hideous affliction- disease- and needs more attention from those who have the ability but need the facilities to create the cure, if there is such a thing, or away to stop the genetic triggers that cause such a wasting of a human life.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  4. As a major Saints fan, I remember Steve as this powerful running. He would dominate on special teams and on defense. I cried for a good 10 minutes when I saw him Sunday walking off the field with the help of the players. He was a quick, unstoppable beast on special teams. It breaks my heart to see him like this. He might be weak, but he’s not going to loose this battle, at least not any time soon!
