Hawkins feels the Heat

I spend a few days in Texas and all hell breaks lose in Boulder. Clearly Dan Hawkins is under fire. The question isn’t if but when. Rumors have everyone from Mike Shanahan and his son taking over to bringing Knute Rockne back to life. And Hawk hasn’t been fired yet.

I was excited when CU hired Hawkins. I liked his enthusiasm, his focus on the student part of student/athlete and his track record at Boise St. After he landed Darrell Scott, I honestly thought this program was on its way back. How wrong was I? Very. Hawkins biggest error will always be his apparent favoritism of his own son at Quarterback. Nepotism never works well in college athletics. Even Pete Maravich and his father Press were a bad mix at LSU. Nothing good ever really comes from it. (And let’s face it, Cody is no Pete Maravich). The whole thing is a shame, because the Buffs will be back to square one in the process. Perhaps it’s time for all of us to lower our expectations in Boulder, accept the fact that they can never compete on the level with Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Oh, sure, maybe a season or two, but nothing that lasts very long. I hope I’m proven wrong on this theory, that I’m way off base on all of this and that Hawk stays and builds CU into a national title contender. And I hope to win the lottery as well. But we know how that turns out now don’t we.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

I.like you, thought Hawkins would be a good coach and a good fit at C.U.

I can’t say its nepotism that brought him down, there are a lot of things that factor into success and failure.

I’d like to see it turn around and get to at least the .500 mark soon out at Boulder and make the north more respectable but that is not going to happen this year.

Good luck to hawkins. I hope his son got an education at CU and can get on with a productive life in his chosen field outside of football.

there are a lot of coaches available out there in the world. Maybe next year will be dan’s year.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene
