How I Came to Love Soccer: A somewhat true story

This is a cartoon I did for the March issue of Mile High Sports Magazine. I think it might be the first time I ever really did something auto-biographical. And it was great fun. I might try to do a few more like this in the future. It was a blast to revisit some of my favorite soccer toons that I did during my years at the Rocky and then talk about my transformation into a soccer geek. Well, calling myself a soccer geek might be exaggerating it a bit, but at least I can now watch the games without falling asleep. That’s real progress people! As they say in Liverpool and I paraphrase, thanks to all of you “I Never Draw Alone”!!!!

  1. Welcome to the club! I’ve been waiting for this day since I started following your cartoons 20 years ago! And yes, my fellow Liverpool supporter: “YNWA!”

I’d recommend going to a game (FC Dallas is close): MLS isn’t up to the EPL standard, but stand with the supporters and you’ll feel an atmosphere that will change your outlook in fandom.

  2. Dear Drew,

Do you like soccer or do you not?

    Signed,

“If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice”

  3. Those soccer sleeping pills have turned into Viagra. As for a true soccer experience, go see the Seattle Sounders at Century Link Field. Believe it or not, it can get louder than any EPL match, possibly more than a Seahawks game (sorry….)

  4. I can relate Drew. I hated soccer, I thought it was the dumbest sport in the world and proof that the world was weird when it was the #1 sport world wide. I coached it for my kids a few years, just because it was a good introductory level sport, but when they got some real coaches that really understood the game, they taught it to them and to us and I learned that it is a fabulous game. Now there is not much that I would watch instead of Soccer – before the last Super Bowl, I would have chosen a Bronco game over soccer, but after that, soccer moved up another notch!

Can’t wait for the world cup!!

  5. I have come to appreciate soccer. What athletes! And i have to disagree with Good ‘ol George, a really good soccer experience, team, and the best fans reside in Portland, Oregon. It would be worth the trip, Drew, to make a swing through the Northwest and make your own decision.
