  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

Like most things in life the lack of D-1 playoffs is because of the money involved in all the silly bowl games. pure and simple.

if playoffs are good enough for every other level of ncaa sports its good enough for the big boys in D-1.

and don’t give us the garbage about missing too much school. we have all heard the formula for making the playoffs work. You pick the 16 best teams and have them play on these dead weekends in December with the championship game the first weekend in January. but its all about the money involved in the puppy chow bowl.

    its all about the money.

My little school, Northwest Missouri State University is the the Division 2 playoffs and championship game this weekend. that is the 5th straight time they have made the championship game and the have lost the four previous times, but at least they made it to the game. Its in, of all places, Florence, Alabama and will be on espn 2 on saturday. GO BEARCATS!!!

  2. Like all good politics the so called commander-in-cheif I recall wanted a playoff system or bracket. The president was stuffed at the goal line from the bowl committee’s and never reached a conclusion. The whole thing was dropped and never brought up again. Does anyone care about a meaningless bowl with no pay off to the viewer? I mean it doesnt have to be money just the fact that you are in the running for a national championship counts. The real joke in the BCS is the Boise St. vs TCU game starring for the Back Door Bowl. Two teams that are gonna beat the hell out of each other for runner up or third place? WOW. If gambling didnt exist the whole thing would be all for nothing.

  3. Good morning Drew –

The BCS system is all kinds of illogical. Anyone who complains about the length of time it would take for a playoff system obviously has never noticed how long Basketball season is.

Plus, if you use College Football Logic, Notre Dame was the co-national champions back in 2007 with a 3-8 record!

    Notre Dame beat Stanford

    Stanford beat USC

    USC beat Illinois

    Illinois beat Ohio State

Ohio State played in the National Championship game, and lost to LSU, so Notre Dame shares the title, yes? 🙂

    (isn’t this fun?)

  4. Good Morning from Phoenix,

There is NO excuse for the lack of a playoff in D-1. NO!!! Even high schools have city/state playoffs. Revenues for the conferences and the NCAA would be fantastic. Fan support would drive TV like March Madness. The season would be more exciting if the teams knew there would be 16 slots to fill for a chance at the “Dream”. Only one thing stands in the way…”Corporate Greed!!” The NCAA has made a pact with the devil and to blazes with fans, players, and good common business sense. The web of bowl sponsership entwines the lazy NCAA to the point of declaring that the earth is flat and the BCS system works. Having Boise play TCU this year is an example of that stupidity. Just when we could see some real challenge from the “also rans” of college football, they only get to play each other to declare who was the best of the “pretenders”. Don’t kid yourself to think this game was anything else but covering the collective butts of the BCS system.

We’ll never know if those teams could have challenged the big conference teams. Texas gets the big game by virtue of their record AND their history as a power program dispite a “home game” squeeker against a Nebraska team that totally stopped them in their tracks, probably knocked Mckoy out of contention, AND it took a out of bound kickoff and a 15 yard penalty in the last minute to do that! But, who are we? The unwashed public and the players who all see the playoffs as a doable, sensible, profitable and logical culmanation of a great season. Don’t pee on my leg and say it’s raining. It discusts me!!!

  5. I’m of the opinion that the BCS computers should build the seeds for the playoffs. They are useful as the Notre Dame guy above pointed out. Notre Dame could go 3-8 or 4-7 and someone would make an argument that they should be in the National Championship. At least the BCS took out some of the bias in the rankings.

  6. I hate the BCS one of the solutions would be play the bowls like they have for years. Then take the 4 best teams and play it!!! Have one game the Friday before the NFL Playoffs then play the other game on Monday night!!! Then play a championship game the following Monday night! Play all 4 games at sites that do not have a major bowl game! That way the schools that go to the lesser bowl games still get thier share of the pie and hopefully there is a national champion that is played out!!!

  7. Call me old fashioned, I liked the old days when there were just bowl games. Life just keeps getting more and more complicated….could someone hand me my cane?

  8. This is why I don’t follow the college game.

The name of the game is always MONEY. You make a lot more money selling 20+ Bowl Games than you do with just one final winner game. The NCAA will cluck its tongue at the sportswriters, politicians and fans all clamoring for fairness, saying that they understand, but this is the “fair” way. Then they will go back to their back rooms and count the money.

Besides, the name “Super Bowl” is already taken.

  9. (Hey Brad – I’m a girl. 🙂 )

Anyway – I must disagree with Brad, there still is a lot of “favoritism” in the current system. Otherwise, how did USC stay in the top 10 for so long? If any other team had been slapped around by Washington (who had the temerity to break their nearly two season long losing streak on the Trojans) like that would have fallen out of the rankings all together. But, because it’s USC & Pete Carrol, they held on until the last minute.

There is also this belief that any team that isn’t from a major BCS conference just isn’t good enough for the championship. TCU & Boise State this season are good examples. Cincinatti is from the Big East and yet still shrugged off because it’s not a “Football Factory” like Floriday, Texas or USC.

A Playoff system would really help eliminate all of this.
