It’s Alive!

It’s Alive and coming to college athletics near you. It’s the Super Conference. The ACC, Pac 12, and the SEC are setting themselves up as the power brokers in the NCAA. I do have to laugh at one school who looks like they could get stuck out in the rain. Texas. They were greedy from the beginning and now may have to beg their way into a super conference. Greed never pays. Well, at least not in this case.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

Its a mess in the BCS. In the KC paper columns they are calling NE a coward for not standing up to TX. HUH, all those 11-1 votes against NE and the sheep following TX to slaughter. It would be fine with me if TX just goes independent like ND and BYU.

woody in the “Past” stated that he predicted super conferences in the ’70’s. Its all driven by greed and avarice. The only participants getting hurt in this are the student(?)/athletes. Maybe its time for the NFL to invest some in their “farm”system and actually help these kids with something more tangible than an education. If you want to call it a stipend so be it. Most of these kids don’t understand the value of the education they are supposed to be receiving and only see the dollar signs.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. I do not like it Sam I am

I do not like this superconference sham

I do not like it on the field of play

I do not like it any way

I do not like how teams will align

I do not like them seeing only dollar signs

I hope that all the money they expect

Comes back to bite them in the (ok, pick your own word here)

Obviously I am not a fan of these inclusions, mergers, whatever you want to call them. Missouri saying they are going to the SEC? We have already lost any sense of region (La Tech in the WAC-seriously?) so I guess those arguments died years ago.

Gene says Woody predicted this years ago and I will have to believe him with that. I’ll reverse the prediction a bit, however, by saying years from now, should these superconferences actually take place, you will see some schools divest themselves from the superconferences to go after even more money. They will get tired of sharing the pot with the “also rans” and decide they can make more on their own. Kind of a select group free agency among colleges.

  3. The machinations of Texas have been of great interest here in the Sports Department of the San Antonio Express-News. Even though I don’t follow the college game, I admit to a bit of schadenfreude because of the arrogance of the Texas program.

  4. I shake my head at the geological shifts taking place, but I can think of one positive: Superconferences can and will lead to an actual playoff system.

  5. I don’t really care how the conferences align, as long as we get good football. I’m fine with it if the big time universities want to make more money; it doesn’t really affect me. What I would like is a credible playoff system, which I think we could get if we had 4 16-team conferences. Better yet, those conferences would ditch the corrupt NCAA and form their own leadership, but maybe that’s wishful thinking.
