Michael Sam Gets Sound advice

I believe the Michael Sam announcement this weekend that he is gay is a civil rights issue. Michael Sam’s journey ahead will be a treacherous one, with many people watching his every move. Much like Jackie Robinson before him he is leading the way for the acceptance of a gay man in football. He isn’t the player Robinson was. He is a projected 4th to 6th round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. So there is the reality in that alone. I also think that Sam will not face the intense bigotry that Robinson endured. But he will face a nation and, in particular a sport, who are still very divided on this issue. Personally, I believe it’s time to put this issue behind us and treat each other as equals, regardless of race, creed, religious beliefs or sexuality. It all comes down to another quote by the Great Jackie Robinson: “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me… All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

I will almost bet that in the almost 80 years of the NFL there have been players who have been gay but were protected in the locker room and beyond by team mates. He is the first that has come out and been open about his sexuality.

When Michael Sam finally hits the field and shows his abilities this whole thing about him being gay will be forgotten. IF some team in the NFL can see past this he could have a future in the league. Yes the fans will be cruel until he becomes a member of your team, then then story will change. But first he has to prove he can play, just like any other rookie.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. When will we get past this issue and color of skin and what sex you are, etc. etc. as being such a big focus. I keep thinking we will grow up, maybe i just expect too much too soon……..Can we not be “judged” by our skills, attitudes, actions?
