NFL Training Camps Open

Uncategorized

NFL camps have open all over the league this weekend. It always makes for good cartoon fodder and I’ll be doing a fair share of Training Camp cartoons in the days and weeks to come. This one was in this weekend’s Chicago Tribune. It looks like Jay Cutler has finally met his match.

The Broncos got off to a rough start on Sunday with Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter both going down with injuries. I sometimes wonder if the new NFL pushes these guys a bit beyond what their bodies can take. Years ago the season ended in January and we didn’t hear from the players again until July for training camp. Sure, some guys came in out of shape but that, after all, was why they held training camp to begin with. Now players finish in February, start daily workouts immediately and show up for umpteen mini-camps during the off-season. Is it all really necessary? And to what end? Dez Bryant in Dalls is out for 6 weeks. Moreno for 3 to 4. And this is before they even play a meaningless preseason game. What do you think? Do you agree or have another thought. Feel free to share.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

I remember what you are saying about training camps. Players used to have jobs in the off season but with the money so big, teams can’t afford to have their guys out of sight. the constant poundings that they take require that they take better care of themselves. (STEROIDS) These guys have gotten bigger faster and stronger with weights and interval training(STEROIDS) to prepare themselves for the season.

But body can only take so much before the muscles fatigue and injuries happen. And as fans we demand more and more of these guys and response the coaches tend to be really cutthroat with there dealings with the players. So what do you do when you are under the hammer. And as the money gets bigger for the league, players and teams it is only going to get worse. The CBA had better have a rookie salary cap or some of these veteran guys who have been through the grind are gong to resent these rookies and theb there are going to be problems across the board.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Isn’t Buckhalter often injured? Do we know what Knowshon has been doing this past off season? It is interesting that it seems there are more injuries in baseball, for instance, since the crackdown on steroids. Well, if the NFL is training too much, they will refigure how they do things, the players that get lost in the meantime are taking it for the team, or league, as it were.

  3. As I see in the cutler toon there is more than just mike martz chopping on his rear. I dont wish injuries on him but more of the same of last year. same interceptions and same average team. If he thinks that Denver fans were bad just wait till the Chicago fans have at him. Also with Knowshon and Bucky let’s hope they make full recoveries and come back soon. I rather have these injuries early in training camp then in the season when we need them. As Always GO BRONCOS!!!!
