On A Wing and a Prayer

drawn for 9News KUSA TV Denver

It is a Broncos victory for the ages. One we will remember just as much as “The Drive”, as much as “The Fumble” and as much “The Helicopter”. Some will call it “The Pass”. I will refer to it simply as “On A Wing and A Prayer”. Tebow to Demaryius Thomas= TD. The nights passing yards =Tebow: 316. This has been, I think, the most memorable season in Broncos history. Yeah, I know, beating the Packers in the Super Bowl was pretty sweet. Yeah, so was beating the Falcons for the second Lombardi trophy. But, seriously, name another season that has been more fun? 77? Maybe. But this one has been so unexpected…Let me know what you think!

  1. Drew,

For a few luck coincidences, I was able to attend the game. It was the most complete offsensive game Tebow and all the offense played. While the Donkos’ FGs certainly kept the Steelers in the game, this one did not feel like a miracle pulled from a nether region Your toon showing Tebow riding DT to the win is true, there are so many players that pulled out one or two plays that we, the fans, never appreciated but made a difference.

We go to NE next Sunday knowing full well we EARNED the right to re-visit Brady and his friends.

As an aside, the stadium was filled with Steelers fans, and with few exceptions, they were VERY cool and able to discuss the game, plays, and outcome in a reasonable manner. Gotta say, I like the Pitts fans compared to others (looking at you Chicago and NE).

  2. Good Morning from OMaha,

wow, what a game. tebow, while he won’t admit it, in his play thumbed his nose at his critics. Yes it was one game- but what a game. Yes the steelers had injuries, but it was bearcreek high in those steeler uniforms. they were still the steelers and they still get paid very well to play a game.

as trent dilfer said on espn-when the bronco’s line up with a running back next to tebow the first read is run- then you have to figure out who is going to run- 1 is it mcgahee, then is it tebow- your 3rd read is pass. Yes the safties helped by running up as run support but it was a beautiful way to end a spectacular afternoon in denver!

Even as a chiefs fan- this was a great win for the AFC Worst. ON to new england. I just hope the playbook that got the bronco’s over 300 yards in passing remains open to tebow and the bronco’s.

as you said- you gotta believe!

strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. The movie will come out on TV in time for summer camps to start. If by some miracle, Denver wins at New England on Saturday, it will come out during the Draft. If we win the AFC Championship, it will be at theaters in August. If we win the Super Bowl, it will be next Christmas and will be an Oscar contender.

  4. Wow – what a game – the first quarter was disappointing, but right as the 2nd quarter started, the entire team stated playing really well. The defense did well in the first half (not so well in the second), and Tebow showed that he actually can pass the ball. And he threw some nice ones, too.

I was texting my mother in law right when OT started, groaning and hoping it wouldn’t last too long and then BAZINGA!

So much fun – onward to New England, and one of the worst pass defenses in the league!

  5. Drew, I think you may be right about this game being one of the great games in Bronco history. No one gave us a chance of winning and yet, we did. I wonder what it will take to silence the Tebow doubters.

Drew not only are your cartoons brilliant, but so are your words!

  6. I like the fact you have a nice archive so I could look up what I posted when we drafted Tim Tebow. On April 23, 2010, I said “I’m not really happy with the Tebow pick because I don’t really feel QB was that high of a need compared to other areas. I am not sure it’s going to work out, but at least with Tebow if it doesn’t work, it won’t be due to a lack of effort on the player’s part. A much safer risk than Maurice Clarett. Better than Tommy Maddox, too.”

That probably gets me marked as a Tebow hater, but you know what, I stand by it. It was a risk, but better than some other draft picks in Broncos history. On the other hand, QB was apparently a bigger need area than I gave it credit for.

  7. This is definitely the most enjoyable and fun season in a long time. However, for those of us around in 1977, nothing will ever top the Orange Crush. Everything in town was orange, people were shot for changing the channel during a game (maybe not so fun), there was a huge parade BEFORE the Superbowl, and as the Superbowl wound down the Broncos fans were chanting “We love the Broncos”. It was unconditional love and the first time we ever experienced anything like this.

This game was beyond entertaining (and having been at the stadium since the 60’s) I would put it just behind the first AFC championship game on Jan.1, 1978. Overall, I can’t imagine this ever surpassing the Drive or the first Superbowl win, but probably ahead of most others.

  8. Drew–

Love this cartoon! I think it’s one of the classics, but I admit I am biased… any toon you do with the Broncos mascot is an automatic fave.

My husband and I were on our feet screaming at the TV in the overtime drive. Our poor cat was looking at us like we had lost our collective minds. But what a finish!

  9. THIS ONE WAS AWESOME!!!! TIM TEBOW STICKING IT TO ALL OF HIS CRITICS TO WIN A GAME NO EXPERT THOUGHT WE COULD WIN! D.T. WITH A COMING OUT PARTY FOR THE AGES!!! WOW THIS IS BETTER THAN ANY HOLLYWOOD SCRIPT. DEFENCE MAKING LIFE MISERABLE FOR BIG BEN. BRONCO COUNTRY IS LOSING IT’S COLLECTIVE MIND. Now on to New England and another playoff game. This game before the win was icing on this season cake. Now we get more icing. We as Broncos fans are really blessed to have Tim Tebow here in Denver. Maybe Hurricane Josh was not the devil as we all thought. as always GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Dear Drew

I had a co-worker who went to the game and while there he took this amazing picture. Just before the start of the game some jets roared past Invesco but in the trail of their wake this smoke or fog began to form until it became this (for lack of a better description) an “Angel’s Halo” According to my friend that was the moment he had a feeling the Bronco’s would pull off the miracle victory.

Since the win I’ve hear people call it many things.

    OTebowing

    Hail Demarius

Yes, your comment “Wing and a Prayer”

Just think at the start of the season nobody could have dreamed the Bronco’s would have made the playoffs much less winning this game. All I heard was how Josh McDaniels destroyed the team and our goose was cooked for maybe 5 years. Luckily nobody got the memo to Elway, Fox, Tebow and company

    All the best

    Louis
