My Opinion for the Day: The penalties leveled at Penn State weren’t harsh enough.

  1. Perhaps it wasn’t enough, but I’m not sure Bowl bans and loss of scholarships is the right punishment.

    Bowl bans and scholarship reductions

-do not hurt the guilty, because, as far as I know, they are gone from Penn State

    -do not help the victims

    -hurt innocent people

The punishment I agree with is the $60 mil fine to be used to help abuse victims. This part serves another purpose other than satisfying a vindictive public audience. I would have supported Mark Emmert if he had fined them much more than that, perhaps over several years. Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio suggested $10 mil a year for 10 years, and I feel that this is closer to an appropriate punishment, though perhaps with $15 or 20 mil a year.

  2. I agree with Kevin, but the program itself did need a check. If Paterno and Sandusky had been, say, baseball coaches at the same school (or any other NCAA school), it’s highly unlikely they would have held the sway they did over the entire community. College Football could make a case for being the biggest sport in the country, and is certainly the case in a lot of towns and cities in America.

Paterno has passed away, and Sandusky will receive his punishment from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. There is nothing the NCAA can do to them now. But the program itself provided the power base for Paterno to hide and deflect any scrutiny.

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

All of the people who were involved in this are either dead, in jail or have resigned in shame. That fine of 60m is equal to one season’s gross football revenues. And they get to pay it out over 5 years.

I still think that the program should have been shut down and the student/athletes there released from their obligation to the university.Nothing can change the past. The NCAA has tried to balance the punishment of the school with the needs of the student athletes who were not involved in this horrible incident.

The big 10 is also going to get a piece of PSU but once again it will be financial in nature. When Penn state joined the conference they were kind of the red headed step child. that was back in ’93. Maybe its time for the big 10 to jettison this snake in the wood pile.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  4. Dear Drew,

All I have is a question. What would you consider a “harsh enough punishment”?

    All the best
