TODAY’S ESPN MONDAY NIGHT MADNESS ANIMATION IS BELOW SO PLEASE SCROLL DOWN!

Sometimes there just aren’t enough words to describe “ugly”. And maybe ugly isn’t even the right word. I’m sure all of you have a few of your own words to describe what the Broncos looked like yesterday. It was the worst performance by a Broncos team I’ve ever seen since moving to Denver in 1982. And yes, that includes the 55-10 Super Bowl blowout. In that game the Broncos at least made an effort for the first few minutes. Sunday there was no effort. This looked like a team who had just been told before kickoff that their one week mini vacation to London won’t start until Thursday. And oh, by the way did we tell you the 49ers already left for London. That’s what it looked like. And, hey, those kinds of things do happen. Just like they do in your office when someone tells you the company isn’t buying the coffee anymore, or that Christmas bonus you were counting on, well, stop counting on it.

I’ve never actually witnessed a real live mutiny but what we all saw yesterday in Denver was every bit that and more. It spells (we hope) the end of a very, very bad experiment of bringing in a young arrogant coach who could care less about the history of the franchise he coaches. Know this Broncos fans, Josh McDaniels has never been about you. Or about the storied past of the Broncos. Josh has always been about Josh, his way or the highway, his way or no way. He doesn’t care about a team that once went door to door to drum up enough support to stay in Denver. He doesn’t care about Floyd Little or John Elway or stories of Lombardi Trophies past. And he clearly doesn’t care about this so called Raiders rivalry. No. The only thing he was embarrassed about yesterday was the fact that HE got blown out in the Madden football game he thinks he’s playing on his XBox 360. We can only hope that Pat Bowlen has had enough, because, and I think I speak for a lot of Broncos fans today, I know we all sure have. Yeah. We’ve all had more than enough.

If you liked this cartoon, and miss the days when you could see more of this kind of thing in your daily paper, call the Denver Post and 9News. Let them know that you’d like to see my cartoons back again. It certainly can’t hurt. I’m not able to draw the local cartoons as often as I used to because I have to pay the bills. When I do a local one like this, I do it for you. I don’t get compensated for it. So please feel free to take up my cause and help to return my cartoons to Colorado. And while you’re at it, please take some time to let the great folks at ESPN.com, the Chicago Tribune, Mile High Sports Magazine (where I do local cartoons once a month), Metro North News and the Communicator of Santa Rosa, NM how much you do love the cartoons. Every little bit helps.

  1. I’m a Raider guy but I posted this for you under the main Bronco discussion.

Bring back Drew Litton! Without question he would have something amusing to bring to the table in this type of situation. The greatest sports cartoonist who’s ever lived ought to be drawing for the best paper in the state!!!

I really miss your tribute cartoons in the paper, always made my day in that kinda sad, nostalgic kind of way.

    Thanks as always,

    A displaced Raider Fan

  2. I have witnessed a mutiny some years back in a small town basketball team here in Hungary and it was every bit like what I saw yesterday…

I do think Josh is the core of the problems, but I also think that if players ruins 76 000+ people’s day (week, month, year) with the kind of play we saw (and I didn’t say anything about TV viewers), than they aren’t any small bit better and they shouldn’t be allowed to put on the orange-blue uniform. They are pro football players, getting tons of money for it, they have to suck it up, because the crowd isn’t for them, they are playing for the crowd, they should never forget that!

Pat lost out on the experiment, that is for sure. The season is down the drains, that is for sure too. BUT: we have a young core of really talented players and now the task is to find an experienced HC and a good DC for the next season, if there’ll be a next season…

  3. Dear Mr. Litton,

That drawing makes me wonder if you had been spying on me for that was exactly my reaction to what I saw yesterday. (Meant as a joke)

    All the best

    Louis

  4. Dear Mr. Litton,

Now being more serious here. What did we expect when Josh McDaniels was hired? I mean this is the guy who spent years under Bill “Spygate” Bellicheck. The man who acted all high and mighty and god forbid anybody questioned him.

Well we have learned that Josh is no Bill…….its more like Josh is full of Bull.

    All the best

    Louis

  5. Good Morning from Omaha,

wow, just what happened out there yesterday. They were showing the pats and chargers out on the plains but the score would scroll across the bottom of the picture and I was in disbelief.

These are pro football players- both teams get paid, and very well, to play a childs game and this is the best the bronco’s can do?

I have been in Josh’s corner because I thought he could coach…I also thought Hawkins could coach at CU. I knew callahan couldn’t coach but it could have been my innate hatred of the raiders that tipped me off about him.

I always fall back on the old “they need to get there players in the system” line. Hawkins has had five years but Josh- its like his pep talk before the game consisted of ” you guys suck, this team sucks, and so does this town now go out and win?”

You gave up 59 pints to Oakland? sounds more like a defensive problem. You only scored 14- the offense needs some fine tuning.

I think Josh just blew up the team for the whole world to see and now the rebuilding begins and it starts in london against the niner’s!!!! or not?

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  6. Drew,

I grew up in Denver and enjoyed your cartoons for years. I was astounded when I heard that they closed the RMN instead of the Post, and flabergasted that the Post did not transferr you over. It just made sense.

I hope that you continue to provide these tantalizing bits for us fans and I will continue to petition the Post to bring you back to the fans that love your work.

PS, ESPN dhould also inslude your Monday animations in their pregame. It would bring a whole new audience.

  7. Drew, thanks for speaking out about the coaching, it seems like the local media is too gutless or afraid to lose their job for saying what needs to be said, pathetic if you ask me. and you were spot on with ALL your comments regarding McDaniel’s. keep up the great work!

  8. ^ this

I’ve been a Bronco fan for 37 years and I have loathed the Raiders for 37 years. That heartless, gutless display yesterday was an absolute disgrace.

Also, the two Broncos that were shown on the sidelines laughing at the end of the game should be S%$T CANNED OUT OF HERE!

  9. For the Raiders to be this good….someone must have locked up Al Davis so he couldn’t mess with the team this week.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Al Davis must go down – and stay down.

  10. Drew–

I missed yesterday’s debacle. Apparently I was lucky that way. Seriously, for the Broncos to lose AT HOME to the detested Raiders by that large a margin… what the happened???? When are the pitchforks and torches coming out?

I’m keeping the ipecac and the Immodium handy for the rest of the season. I think they might come in handy.

  11. Drew Litton has been a part of Bronco football since I was a little kid growing up in Denver. My old man had your earliest collection and that’s where I was introduced to the great art and humor. I followed that into the Rocky…

That said, you hit the nail on the head several times with this ‘toon and article. I think I said, “yes!” out loud about five times while reading it. Many, many times I am guilty of telling people who get overly emotional about football that “it’s just a game” but yesterday’s loss was about more than just football.

You are so very, exactly correct when you say that McDaniels does not get it nor care about the loss or what it means to the history of the franchise. A regular loss to the Raiders I can deal with, what we saw yesterday was pure and total “quit” – it was a stain that will never go away.

For anyone that has been a fan of team for a while, for anyone who grew up in Denver, for all the fans who’s parents and grandparents are fans…yesterday was about more than just football.

I can only hope from afar that Bowlen “gets it”. No one, and I mean, no one would fault him for cutting his losses now rather than later. The question is: does Bowlen get it? I do not suspect he will until the fans voice their frustration with their dollars.

I have been saying since McDaniels was been hired that he runs the team and coaches like he is playing Madden NFL. He has completely destroyed the franchise. Even if Bowlen does fire him during the ‘bye’ week it will take 5 years minimum to get back to where we were.

I have a tinfoil hat theory that Bill Belechick purposely sent McDaniels as a mole to destroy the Broncos franchise from the inside out. If there’s any truth to that – mission accomplished, Bill.

Drew, Denver is not the same place I left 10 years ago. It is still my “home” but after the Rocky went south things sure have changed, slowly but surely.

I cringe when I see pictures of Woody Paige dressed up in Raider garb trying to get a rise out of fans – there was a time that wouldn’t have happened or been tolerated so lightly.

    These ain’t your old man’s Broncos…

  12. Drew, just sent an email to the Post. Denver needs a treasure like you; I fear we will lose you soon. Best regards, Kurt

  13. Rockies are done, CU and CSU football are tanking, Nugs haven’t started yet (and will lose Melo), and the 4-4-0 Avs are the definition of middle of the road.

The Rapids finally made the playoffs, so there’s never been a better time to jump on the bandwagon. Just Sayin’…

  14. Great work as always… fantastic line: “the only thing [McDaniels] was embarrassed about yesterday was the fact that HE got blown out in the Madden football game he thinks he’s playing on his XBox 360.”
