Shannon Goes to Canton

Uncategorized

I had the good fortune of having Shannon Sharpe provide the intro for my book “Give My Regards To Elway”. So I decided to do a Sharpe in Review cartoon parade in his honor. These were cartoons I did on Shannon during his time with the Broncos and my time at the Rocky. Great memories. Great guy. Great Player! And ohhhh could that mouth chatter.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

you captured the public perception of the essence of Shannon sharpe. was he as verbal when the camera’s weren’t on?

I always disliked him because he played against the chiefs twice a year every year, him and easy Ed could tear them up. Oh he was a great player and deserves all of the accolades he has coming.

He made the HOF and is still on TV on sunday’s.

Have a great weekend. see you on Monday.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Love going down memory lane with the Shannon toons!! When my twin sons were 3 years old, one got a Sharpe jersey and the other one got a Davis jersey and when ever they had their jersey’s on you had to call them Shannon and Terrell or they would not answer you. They really thought that they were Shannon and Terrell. When Shannon went to the Ravens, “my Shannon” sat in his closet and cried that he did not want to go to Baltimore. We had to explain to him that he did not actually have go to Baltimore. He was 5. It was so cute. Have a great weekend!

  3. The funny thing, watching the HOF announcement, was Shannon was totally speechless…at least for a while! I’m sure he’ll make up for it at the induction ceremony. Any bets on who’ll have the longest speech, Deion Sanders or Shannon Sharpe?

  4. Sharpe is loved in Denver, but iconic in Baltimore. As for the smack talking, few are able to raise it to the level where you actually cheer for them; Charles Barkley, Muhammad Ali and (from a quasi-sport) “Stone Cold” Steve Austin were the best. Shannon was also good at it.

But you don’t get to Canton, Cooperstown or Toronto by running your mouth: you have to be able to back it up, and that’s where Sharpe moved into the next level.

  5. Dear Drew,

Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

This may be a bit off-topic though I don’t think its off by much. These days we have so many WR’s who are nothing more than a bunch of mouthy diva’s. People like Terrell Owens, Chad OchoCinco and before he retired Keyshawn Johnson. Now was Shannon Sharpe mouthy? Of course. However the difference between Sharpe and those I just mentioned and some others who names escape me at the moment (blame it on insomnia) is that Shannon never used his mouth to rip his own teammates. You never heard Sharpe telling Elway to “Give me the damn ball”, or that the coaching staff were lame or a bunch of idiots. That is why Sharpe is remembered just as much for his excellence on the field. Now maybe Owen and OchoCinco MIGHT (repeat might) make the hall of fame someday but their on field accomplishments will always take a back seat to their mouths. That is the difference between Shannon Sharpe and other wide reciever diva’s.

    All the best

  6. Thanks, Drew! Louis, i couldn’t agree with you any more. Shannon, has a sense of humor and humbleness and never took himself too seriously when he was playing. And played hard, cared about the game, the fans, his team, and knew what his legacy to the game would be.

  7. Louis:

Terrell is a definite HOFer: He’s been one of the top receivers in the game for over a decade, which alone should put him in.

As for Chad EightFive, He’s definitely mouthy, but has almost always gotten along with his teammates. In fact, He’s spent his entire career with the Bengals, which alone is an unusual statement of loyalty.
