Wow! Words just cannot describe what all of us in Broncos Nation are seeing week in and week out. Driving 95 yards in 4 minutes after lulling us all asleep, including the Jets, was just beyond description. It reminded me so much of Elway in Cleveland with 98 yards to go, I swear I was looking on the field for those dog bones they used to throw. None of what are witnessing makes any sense at all.  I drew this cartoon for 9News and was supposed to get it to them by 10. I pushed the cartoon too far off deadline (I sent it at like 10:25) that it didn’t make the air. It will tomorrow. That said the drawing above was done about as fast as I can draw. It’s more sketch quality than final cartoon quality.

Anyway, considering how the Broncos season is unfolding here are a couple of thoughts for all of us to ponder…

1. Tebow knows how to manage a game. He doesn’t make the stupid mistakes that Kyle Orton so often made under pressure. Tebow remains calm, under control and cool when it matters most. That’s something you can’t teach or coach. You either have that temperment or you don’t. I think some of it has to do with Tebow’s faith that teaches you not to worry. He clearly doesn’t.

2. Tebow has Leadership and the desire to compete that you can’t teach. Clearly it makes a difference. His presence in the huddle with 95 yards to go for a touchdown was a perfect example. He told everyone to forget what the offense had done for 3 quarters plus. If the offense takes it 95 yards to win, noe of it matters. That’s a leader.

3. The Broncos have to move the pocket for this offense to work. Tebow throws best in the shotgun and on the run…Not as good as John Elway, but he creates out of chaos like Elway did

4. The Broncos Defense is what is making this whole thing possible. Vonn Miller, Elvis Dumervil and a veteran secondary are playing smart alert defense. The kind of defense that can carry you to the playoffs, as impossible as that sounds.

  1. Dear Drew,

I guess if the Bronco’s-Jet’s game was a Hollywood movie it would be called “The Drive II” “Sor maybe even “Son of The Drive”.

I found it funny that you compared it to Elway’s drive against Cleveland because I thought the same thing. Of course my friend thought I was nuts for suggesting that.

After the last game I wrote how would the Bronco’s respond on offense if they were trailing instead of leading late in the game causing them to do more passing and cut back on their “Da Doo Run Run” offense. Well we got a bit on an answer against the Jets who was considered a solid defensive team going in.

I have to quote you now Drew

To me that simply means using what you’ve got and not worrying about what you don’t have. Tebow right now is no Aaron Rogers, Payton Manning, or Drew Brees. I get that. However the man is so dangerous with his legs that his (currently) sub-par passing ability is just strong enough with his running to keep us winning. Hopefully this won’t sound sacriligeous but I’m saying it anyway. Tim Tebow is no John Elway (yet)…..However perhaps in some area’s of his game John Elway is no Tim Tebow

Just some thoughts from a tired man at 3 a.m.

    All the best

  2. Good Morning from Omaha-

what a game! I agree with most of your take aways about the game. The defense has kept the games close so that tebow can work his magic and what a defense the bronco’s have this year. They have needs on D but thats another discussion for another time.

T-bow is not the stereo typical NFL qb and will probably never be. He will improve his passing ability with practice but its those intangibles you mentioned that make him different.

T bow makes the defense play an 11 on 11 game instead of the usual 11 on 10 game with the quarterback handing off and then running for cover. Some teams will be able to adjust to the change and some won’t. The lions are a special team on Defense but I thought the jets D would be a true test and it was.

The will to win that is embodied in T bow has inspired the bronco’s as a team and thats a good thing and will carry them far this season.

the position of QB is evolving before our eyes and the traditionalist of the NFL don’t like it. Hey don’t worry- be happy- a win is a win. You win with what you have and Fox has settled in for the long run with this evolving team.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. I am in love with Vonn Miller! And the defense. I am not totally sold on Tebow, but at some point we all have to stop being naysayers and go with the fact that he is winning and leading! Although the naysayers probably fuel his determination to succeed. This cartoon is too good. I want this one on a TShirt!

  4. Love the Elway’s shell-shocked look, reminds me of his first few seasons in Denver. Tebow will find his way provided the coaches and fans have some patience.

  5. I’ll buy a Von Miller jersey before I buy a Tebow, but I have to say that I’m impressed and pleased with his one major stat: winning. We’re already one game ahead of last year’s dismal W-L record, and while I’m concerned about the Bears, Patriots and Bills games, I think it’s possible that we can go 8-8 this season. After the past few years, I’d consider a .500 record a winning season. There’s improvement to be made, but at least there has been improvement, and that’s all to the good.

  6. I LOVE your cartoon, Drew! What a ride last night!!! I haven’t been so excited watching a football game since the Broncos’ last Super Bowl win. As the game progressed, I thought about an engine that hadn’t been started in a long time – how it sputters and then starts, only to cut and start over again. I don’t know what Tebow’s final stats were (yards passed vs. rushed, pass completion %, etc.), and they don’t matter. The fact is, the little Tebow engine that could, did, (with the support of his teammates) and we came out with a victory. Tebow did a great job at controlling the game, reading the field, and seeking out opportunities to move the ball. He is coming into his own. As the coaching staff develop plays that fit Tebow’s strengths, I hope that they will continue to work on developing his other skills (passing, for one), so that he can become a well-rounded quarterback, capable of having a long and successful tenure in the NFL. I couldn’t be more excited as a Bronco fan. I feel like this is the beginning of something very special. Only time will tell.

  7. Loved the cartoon as per usual Drew…

…although I totally anticipated you drawing a cartoon of a tip-toeing Tim Tebow past a curled up sleeping Darrelle Revis as he goes into the endzone….

Great game though – still no respect, but that’s okay. We’re winning and it’s fun to watch 🙂
