Tebow. Calm. Cool. Collected.

cartoon drawn for 9News KUSA Denver

I’m still breathing into the paper bag I needed to ease the hyperventilation we all experienced in the final 3 minutes of the 4th quarter. For, what, like the 6th or 7th game now.

It has been one remarkable season and it looks like it might be a long one. Let me know what you think!

  1. Drew,

What a comment on the game! I was lucky enough to attend it with my father (for his 75th B-day). With five minutes left, his words were “the Broncs don’t have a chance.” At the end of OT, his words were “this is the most ridiculous win I’ve seen.” The guy has had season tickets since the mid-1960s, so I’ll defer to his expertise.

In the stadium, it was restrained pandemonium at the touchdown, but it created a slight but noticeable expectation of victory. Prater’s tying FG added a surreal, unbelievable electricity in the stadium, what was just seconds ago was impossible was now probable. The Bears fans sitting a few seats next to us were aghast and speechless. When the Bears got possession, even in FG range, the air was just weird, no one had left, and a palpable question of not how, but when the Broncos would win was hanging over the fans. It did not make objective sense, Chicago had a long but likely FG, but still there was a tangible feel that it was never going to happen. I can’t explain that feeling, I’ve never had it before (perhaps a discussion of faith and spirituality is merited, but you won’t get it from me) Chicago’s fumble was not a miracle, it just simply had to occur for the Broncos, and the Broncos made it occur. Prater’s winning kick was almost anticlimactic at that point, it was just going to happen.

Call it what you want, but there was something special shared in the stadium this afternoon.

  2. It is almost unbelievable, the last few games, and tonight for sure! Tim has brought a fire back to the team- faith in themselves that they do have the ability, they just need to be cohesive and positive.. If they could just start the fire first quarter and continue until they win the game. I found I was almost afraid to watch the last few minutes and overtime! Tebow and Prater are both doing great. The Broncos had a lucky break when Barber messed up. Next week, makes me nervous already!

  3. Didn’t you do a cartoon several years ago with a forecaster saying something about “Elway’s fourth quarter drive expected about 5:55 p.m. or so” ? That’s the way we feel now.

I was out of town and didn’t feel well enough to go watch the game with my father after getting home, so I took a nap. All I have at home to track is the NFL iPad app. My brother-in-law calls me with 5:45 left to go and we’re down 10-0. He asks me if if Denver’s “going to do anything.” I replied “it doesn’t look like it.” 20 minutes later, I’m calling him to say, “every time you think he’s done for, he pulls it out.”

I watched the post-game interview on ESPN and first he thanked Jesus, then spent the rest of the time thanking and praising his teammates. A lot of people are ripping him for his faith. I’m no big fan of religion, as it seems to be a lot of people’s justification for forcing their beliefs on others who might not think that way. (Rick Perry, are you listening?)

Tebow does it right. He may wear his faith on his sleeves (or his eye black), but he’s not forcing anyone to follow it. He gives his praise up front, as is his right and belief, but that’s it. He spent the rest of the interview honestly discussing where he didn’t come through but his teammates did. And he stepped up when he needed to and won the game.

I’m with George Carlin in that I don’t think that Jesus cares whether your team wins or loses, but I also don’t care if you give him credit and glory and are faithful as long as you aren’t expecting me to blindly follow your beliefs because you are in an exalted position.

My brother-in-law (who is a Patriots fan, so next week should be interesting) said that he was telling everyone around him that my father and I were “tearing out what’s left of our hair.” I replied that we were done with the hair and were now working on our teeth.

  4. Dear Drew,

Not so long ago I went for a heart stress test (as part of qualifying to get a new kidney). Well these days instead of pumping any drugs in my system to stress the heart as they did then they could have us watch a Bronco game live.

This Tebow led Bronco team is weekly giving new meaning to the old phrase “The Cardiac Kids”.

    All the best

    Louis

P.S. Just got the calender. Looking forward to getting it.

  5. good morning from Omaha,

HE DID IT AGAIN! long story short here. we had the christmas program at church yesterday at 4- between the program and the chilli feed I came home to see how the bronco’s were doing. Itwas the start of the 4th and you know the situation. The stadium was rocking when the Bronco’s scored the touchdown- even when the bronco’s almost had the on side kick. three runs by the bears stopped cold. punt – tebow gets the team to like the 41 and Prater kicks a field goal. OT- Had to go get some chilli so I missed the OT but just in my heart knew the bronco’s would win. They were like been there, done that.

Its not just tebow. that defense is amazing. and right now Prater is on a roll. Its fun to watch even though the bronco’s are not MY team. It just flat fun again to watch the NFL, especially when the bronco’s are playing.

let the good times roll. and ride this wave for as far as it will take you.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  6. There’s a reason you’re still my fave cartoonist. This cartoon is hilarious and right on the money. That’s exactly how I felt! Great job! Go Broncos!

  7. Well said Mike.

    Mile High Magic IS BACK!!

My hands were still shaking long into last night.

  8. Tebow just had a 235yard PASSING game, but he could have easily had a 335 yard game!

    Think about it:

At the end of the 1st half, 2-3 10yard balls BOUNCED off the wide recievers chests. Then, at the beginning of the 3rd, the tight end let a 60 yard touchdown slip through his fingers. It should have been 20-10, at least!

  9. Find a way to bottle what Tebow does in the fourth quarter, and have him use it in the first three quarters. This way, everyone will stop having fourth quarter heart attacks and his critics will shut up.

  10. Good one, Drew! I just knew this was the one Tebow Magic was going to be proven to be not so magic, I just knew it………OK, so this one was the one that solidified it as magic. Love all the discussions about Divine Intervention, and I really loved Tom Jackson and Trent Dilfer’s admittance that they can’t explain it. I have heard sportscasters say that you can feel the change in the stadium when the offense and Tebow come to the line with the game on the line in the fourth quarter. I hope to experience that next week at the Patriots game. It was great to read Mike’s description of yesterday!

  11. @Harry Thomas said things beautifully.

My initial reaction on seeing the score was along the lines of “No bleeping way! He did it again!” Not that it’s a bad thing… but a nice, boring win would also be appreciated!

  12. What a fun ride our Broncos are taking us on!

The Bears were a tough opponent. Next week, we face a greater one with the Patriots. I refuse to let the fact that the Broncos are playing THE Patriots, get me down. I have more optimism for the Broncos than I’ve had in a long time (since our 2nd Super Bowl win). The Broncos simply need to stay alert, play smarter, and get the best kind of stick-em for the receivers’ gloves. The OL has been doing a good job of protecting Tebow; the defense and special teams are amazing.

Everyone take a few deep breaths before the start of next week’s game, and during the commercials. I know I will be doing just that.

    Peg

  13. Drew, I am surprised that you had the strength to draw any cartoon, let alone this one after this comeback, your must be channeling some of the “Tebow” magic!!!!

  14. Hey Drew: Nail on the head, as usual. I can’t wait to see Tebow’s game-winning Hail Mary. That will clinch it.
