The Draft: Science 101

I’m an admitted draft geek. I don’t know why. I think it has to do with my days playing Madden Football in the franchise mode, spending hours trying to draft a good team. Somewhere along the way I figured out that it didn’t really matter. So I decided to watch the real thing. I once went with a friend to the ESPN Zone and spent 6 hours just following the first round. The friend left for Chicago later that year and I’m sure to this day, it was the 6 hours he spent with me following that first round that did him in.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

I love the draft, but there is no reason for each team to take 15 minutes to make there picks.

They have had months to figure out what they want to do. They know what kind of player they need,

what his abilities have to be and how much they want to pay for those players.

There is an article in the kc web site that with the bad economy the top 5-6 draft picks are pretty much

going to stay with the teams that have them. The other teams aren’t going to pay a lot of early first round

money for the early first round picks.

And the those teams with early picks, detroit, st louis, kc seattle can’t find anyone that would allow them to trade down to a lower pick.

The later rounds with five minutes between picks are really entertaining because the commentators don’t have time to tell you each picks life story as compared to during the early rounds.

Ihaven’t heard who denver is after this year. They are almost as needy as the chiefs in that any player that can walk and is breathing can probably be an improvement over what they have currently.

Good luck this week end Bronco fans.

Pick well, but don’t pick your nose.

Remember, Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. The draft results are fun, but the actually draft is practically unwatchable…

Where do they find all those people in the audience? Do they boo on purpose? Regardless of who is picked? Maybe there are cue cards?

Definitely a made for DVR event.

Any thoughts on the Bronco’s first pick? I don’t get much Bronco Coverage here in Houston.

  3. Thanks, Drew, probably more true than portrayed.

I heard that one early Bronco drafts was done by the previous summer’s Street & Smith college preview!

Things are a little different this year as the draft moves to prime time Saturday night. Only rounds 1&2 will take place the first day with time limits shortened to 10 minutes for the first round and 7 minutes for the second round. On Sunday, the remaining rounds will go off at a faster than 5 minutes per selection speed. Usually on early Sunday, the teams have seen which players have fallen through the first two rounds and move quickly to snap up a player they want.

  4. I love the praying man of the cloth in the drawing. That is awesome, Drew. Nice touch.

I can’t sit though the draft. I usually only care about who was “Mr. Irrelevant” after the draft is over.
