Those Wild NASCAR rivalries

Geez, talk about your Road Rage. NASCAR continues their heated rivalries that have been known to break out into something resembling a bench clearing brawl. They really need to calm these guys down. Whether it’s Kyle Busch vs. Dale Earnhardt Jr. or somebody else going all Rocky Balboa, NASCAR is starting to look a bit like the WWE. Either take them all off the Red Bull or go let some steam off on the L.A. freeway before they get on a track.

Speaking of Roads

I’m on the road this week in Las Vegas. I’m attending the International Licensing Expo trying to jump start my career. Norm Clarke has an article about me in Mondays Las Vegas Review-Journal. You can see it HERE. Life after the Rocky has been different, for sure. I’m drawing more (as many as 10 sports cartoons a week) and only currently getting paid for two by my syndicate. My 9News work is free. We are hoping to find sponsorship for my work at KUSA, but in the meantime I find myself between the Rocky and a hard place (bad pun, I know). So, I’m here to restart my career and seek new opportunities. I’ll update you as I can and you’ll get new cartoons each day.

In the meantime

I want all of you to think of anything else you’d like to see on the blog. It’s continuing to evolve and I want to make sure I take it in a direction that appeals to you all.

‘Til tomorrow, remember, let’s have some fun out there!

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

Have fun in Vegas and good luck. You are very talented and have the drive to make this work.

I am starting over as well and classes start next week. I am really excited about the prospect of doing something different. maybe this has all been a blessing. Only time will tell.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Hope all goes well in Vegas Drew!! GL and most of all have FUN,FUN,FUN!!! I hope that the drawing was a pot shot at NASCAR (thank you), I HATE NASCAR!!! If not thats ok. I do see all of your work on 9News but it is much too bad that the Post does not see your talent. If you have to take your show on the road then so be it. I do not like the Post anyway, its too big and no one pays any attention to that paper just like NAsCar(ha ha). If Woody Paige was not on the Post staff that paper would cease to exsist too, but hey I only watch him on Around the Horn. I like his shananigans on that show but any way. Again, have fun and win lots and lots of money.

  3. Drew,

Good luck in Vegas. I have my fingers crossed for you. Be sure to put $20 on the Broncos to win it all. If they come in this year, you may never need to worry about sponsorship and paying work again.

As for NASCAR, like Matty G., I don’t understand it and don’t care too much for it. Sorry NASCAR nation, my ignorance is my loss. My only wish is that one race out of the year they race in the opposition direction make right turns instead of left turns. Add some challenge…

Tear ’em up in Vegas. Gene’s advice is never more true than now.

  4. Drew,

Laughing is the best part of the day. Usually I’m laughing at myself but none the less, still laughing. I think that you should add a bigger selection of “buy stuff.” Just go ahead and “sell-out.” Sell everything from each cartoon you draw, to make shift books if you want them all. I think customizing is the way to go. If someone wants one of your cartoons on a toilet seat, make it happen. (Not that I do, yet 🙂

Not sure if the Rocky owns the copyrights to old stuff that was in the paper but you should include those as well on your site and for sell.

Another idea is to expanding to other teams or bigger sports issues. I believe that you have a very intelligent sports fan (if those exist) following… so we will get it. I haven’t followed you for very long so maybe it is not your style but like the old saying “it is not a joke unless someone is offended.”ie.Birdman flying over the Lakers was a good cartoon. Keep it up.

  5. Even though the circumstances suck, more “Drew” is good in my book.

I’ve always felt Denver was blessed to have your cartoons all to ourselves. It was like having that secret restaurant that no one knows about.

However, I hope the national exposure will open eyes to the whole country. There’s plenty of sports figures waiting to be made fun of who are not Colorado based. 😀 We just need to find the right conduit to supply them to the masses!!

  6. FOR INSTANCE – Sorry I had to continue

I moved to Houston about 4 years ago from Houston. Here’s some possible material from my “new” region.

#1 – Texas A&M – Always an easy target. A&M fans are rabid and last few seasons has made for many topics.

#2 – Vince Young – His rise and fall. He was a state hero. The Texans were villified when they passed on Young AND Reggie Bush. Now Young is benched in place of a vetern QB and wants out of Tennesee. You can imagine how the sports talk is heating up again on this topic.

#3 – David Carr – Biggest train wreck ever, the #1 pick, #8 from Fresno State. The possibilities for topics were endless with this guy.

#4 – Craig Biggio & Jeff Bagwell – Great guys, sad to see them retire.

#5 – Roger Clemens & Andy Pettite – Hometown guys come home and with Oswalt, power the Astros to the World Series with an average offensive team.

#6 – Brad “Light Out” Lidge – Dude was about a solid as any closer can be… until Game 5 of NLCS against the Cardinals. Pujols pretty much wrecked his career with one swing. He’s had a resurgence in Philly, but he’s struggling again. Sad to see it, Lidge is a great guy. He would always come on the radio, even during his worst struggles.

#7 – Tracy “TMac” McGrady – I’ve about had it this this guy. Ton’s of talent, no heart it seems, pretty fragile too.

#8 – Dikembe Mutombo (spelling?) – Being from Denver, I still love this guy. As a back up to Yao, this guy won over Houston. Stepping up to prop the Rockets whenever Yao went down. He was still a defensive presense up until his knee blew out this year. I still remember with a laugh when the Nuggets tried to utlize him offensively… it didn’t work too well.

#9 – Gary Kubiak – I was pretty estactic when he came down from Denver. I grew watching him back up Elway. Kubiak had the best job in the NFL ever, never actually had to play much since Elway was hardly ever hurt. This is his make or break year from what I can tell. Can’t argue with what “The Kube” has done offensively with the Texans, but the defense is still a problem… Sound Familar Denver?

#10 – Texans vs Cowboys vs Oilers/Titans – Many fans still Bud Adams with a passion since he left with the Oilers to Tennesee. But many are still fans of Titans because of their Oiler roots. Cowboys fans are insufferable, though most of them hate Jerry Jones? It’s a vicious triangle that’s fun to watch from the outside.

My point is that there’s enough material for the whole nation. It would be great to see Drew explode on the nation scene.
