John Fox Has the Right Stuff

Some people aren’t going to like the choice of John Fox as the Broncos new head coach. Take one look at his record this year of 2-14 and one wonders what the Broncos were thinking. But before everyone goes jumping off the south stands take a look at my 5 reasons why I think John Fox is the PERFECT coach to get this franchise back on track.

1. Defense First and foremost the Broncos must get back to playing smashmouth ORANGE CRUSH style defense. It’s been a long time since we heard the thundering hits of Steve Atwater, the stellar goal line stands of Randy Gradishar, and the shouts of Tommy Jackson running down the sideline screaming at John Madden of the Raiders, “It’s all over Fat Man”. Fox is a defensive coach to the core. He will make the personnel moves necessary to bring the Broncos back the their days of Defensive Glory. Say Hallelujah with me!

2. Experience The exact opposite of Josh McDaniels, Fox is a seasoned coach with a winning formula to get this falling meteor of a team turned around. And he won’t be trading off players just because they are better then he is in playing football on Xbox360.

3. Insight He knows talent when he sees it. One name: Julius Peppers. That pretty much sums it up.

4. Leadership He knows how to lead. So much so that he tangled with the owner of the Panthers in 2009 because the owner wanted to jettison all of the teams veteran talent (and salaries) and replace it with young (cheaper) talent. This is THE reason the Panthers fell to 2-14 this season. The rift worsened and Fox was probably relieved to get out when he did. Besides the guy knows how to make an entrance. Note the Orange tie he wore to his Broncos interview.

5. He Hates the Raiders More specifically Al Davis. He left of his own accord with one game left on the schedule in 96 as the Raiders defensive coordinator. Fox had had enough of the mole with no soul.

So, there ya go. 5 reasons. Feel free to disagree. I want to know what you think of the hire.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

Fox is a good hire. NOW get him some players!Across the board-defense is his specialty, now prove it. He, just like Mickey D can’t help the injuries but RIGHT NOW they better get the D Ducks in a row.The offense needs some help as well particularly across the line. The running backs need some help from the o-line and the qb can’t spend his life running for shelter.

My relatives, who live in FL actually met him while they were out sailing. they said he was the nicest most down to earth guy. I believe he will do fine, but beat the chiefs, hmmmmm. That is what rivalries are all about! Good luck to the Orange crush. I love the smash mouth style of defense that is sadly lacking in the NFL. If you want to see some defense, watch the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game and then dream your team could play defense like that!

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. The announcement made my day. I fell in love with the idea when I saw he showed up with an orange tie. This guy gets ‘IT’. I was worried the team would hire Dennison, another offensive whiz with no HC experience. Let’s see a tough physical team on the field. We haven’t had that since Steve Atwater left. I want opposing teams to shudder when they see away game scheduled in Denver in December.

  3. Morning Drew!

Should’ve just started with “Hates the Raiders and Al Davis”. That speaks volumes around Bronco Country. Have a great Friday.

PS. You mentioned TJ, that reminds of the cartoon you did when TJ retired, with him running down the sideline saying “So Long Fat Man”

  4. Hopefully John Fox will get an offensive coordinator that will install a smashmouth offense to compliment the smashmouth defense. Too bad Rick Dennison cannot make a lateral shift and be the Broncos OC.

  5. Gene,

It will take a major revamping of personnel moving forward, no doubt. I’m not sure how Elvis Dumervil is healing. Having the draft picks will help and the great thing is that John fox knows defensive linemen, ie; Julius Peppers.

Keep me filled in on your upcoming journey this way. Have a great weekend.

  6. AtomicLeo, I am so totally in agreement. Defense wins Championships. Look at the Saints last year, Drew Brees, the best quarterback in the NFL, in my opinion anyway, was terrific, but it was the defense that won the Saints the Lombardi trophy.

  7. CJ, yeah I probably should have just written He hates the Raiders as the only reason it was a good hire. McD never got that. Of course, he never got much of anything except beat.

  8. WM, I’m all good with a Ground and Pound team philosophy, but these days you also have to have the right guy under center. One of the great things with Elway being on board is I think he will do everything he can to mentor Tebow. He’s like having a great QB coach and a Football operations guy. Pretty cool.

  9. Hey drew greetings from Albuquerque,

I was shocked at first when they decided to hire fox, i was shocked they hired the only coach in the NFL who had a worse record than McD but your comments inspired me and changed my mind. I am excited to see what this coach can do. We need help with the D (where has been the pass rush lately) we need help with our runningbacks, we havent had a superstar since TD!

  10. GMFO-

I have sent you a private message on face book about those travels. waiting on HUD and paint?

  11. Abq Mike,

Glad that the thoughts at least give you something to think about. Sometimes we just gotta scratch below the surface to see a little light.

  12. Nice to see Elway and crew hire a defence minded coach for once. McDaniels ruined our team like so fast it was here then gone. Fox will bring some hard nose football in here. Orange Crush defence will be back and hopefully the only thing McDaniels did right is Tebow and the orange Jerseys. GO BRONCOS!!!!

  13. Dear Drew,

I can’t say and be honest that I’m glad Fox was hired. As I mentioned in my earlier post I was pulling for Dennison. However I am willing to give Fox a chance to prove me wrong. Too bad we can’t clone a bunch of Lyle Alzado’s (minus the “roid’s”) to stick on the line a bunch of Gradishar’s for our linebacker corp, then either Atwater’s or Bailey’s at Safety and Cornerback.

    all the best

    Louis

  14. Hey Badger! Thanks for that bud. I worked on it last night. I like the menu bar that has drop down menus. Ans I Love the way the comments look! What do you think of the new header at the top?
