It Was Ugly

It was a bit like watching the last lap of yesterday’s NASCAR race. Thankfully no one got hurt, at least not yet. Watching an egotistical young coach in completely over his head is not a pretty picture, especially when he’s the one at the wheel of the franchise you bleed orange for. To say this draft was a mess is an understatement. Perhaps the worst defensive team in the NFL, Josh McDaniels and company did little to help their anemic situation. They spent the off-season signing free agent running backs and then drafted one with the number 12 in the first round. They spent next years first round pick to choose a guy in this years SECOND round. Finally, they traded up for a 6th round pick for a quarterback I guess because his name “sounded” like Tom Brady. Hard to believe McDaniels could blow anything worse than the Jay Cutler debacle, but I think he did.

Now let me hear what you think.

Great response over the weekend, even considering the technical glitches that wouldn’t let all of you enter on Friday. Sorry about that. Technology. When it’s good it’s really good, but when it’s bad…

  1. Disaster area? Drew, you are far too kind. Even the Swine Flu couldn’t cause as much harm as McD just did. Al Davis on his worst draft day could not have screwed things up as badly as McD did for us. McD just did some of the most intimately uncomfortable things to our beloved team.

The most insulting part of the whole event, after we burn our first #1 on Knowshon Moreno, the Redskins stand up within a minute of their time allotment and draft Bryan Orakpo, the DE we should have taken. That deliberately swift action wasn’t just salt in the wound, it was bacon salt mixed with white phosphorous.

There is not enough ^@^!#$&^*&%^ hyperbole available to express my frustration at the Broncos’ draft. Metaphors and similes don’t come close to it.

I keep hoping that I will wake up, it will be 12/31/08 and things will be relatively normal with Shanahan at the helm and Cutler under center.

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

All is not lost. The Bronco’s drafted a guard out of Iowa with Omaha connections.

Seth Olsen went to Millard North. He was a great big kid in H.S. He played very well on a team that had 9 D-1 players and he was one of them.

The kids out there called him Ogre and he would wear a viking helmet, complete with the horns to basketball games .

My son played against them in the state semi’s in football. As a safety they don’t usually get much contact with guards but Olsen was run blocking down field and they met in a dog meeting a semi collision and the semi was nice enough to encourage my son to try again after he almost destroyed him with a block.

The chiefs picked 3 offensive players and 3 defensive players. None which seem to be difference makers.

Tyson jackson???? He doesn’t like the cold, being from Louisiana, and it never gets cold in K.C.

Hopefully they will get some good undrafted free agents and find some diamonds in the rough or two.

Both teams seem to be looking for the next Tom Brady. But if your looking for it you will not find it.

There is not a magic formula they either develop or they don’t. Its up to the player and unfortunately

with the money they pay these guys there is no motivation to do better if it means the difference between 10 million and 12 million dollars its only money at that point, they are comfortable and it doesn’t mean anything to them.

Here hoping the Bronco’s get lucky.

  3. McD is doing the right thing in regards to “attitude”. Get me some leaders who LOVE to play football and have the ability to play. TEAM is the greater goal rather than individuality.

On the draft front…I am confused…

I dont like giving up the #1 next year to jump up spots in the 2nd round. I too was disappointed with passing on Orakpo when we have a deluge of RBs.

McD’s delivery certainly seems arrogant…but just think about it…If he starts to succeed all of us that bleed orange could care less…such is the life of fans.

  4. I thought McD really messed up with letting Cutler get away, but I let that go. Only to have him do *THIS* in the draft?!?!?!?

This guy has little to NO football sense. The team NEEDED defensive front 7 players, so what does McD do? RUNNING BACK!!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!?!?

Then trading away a first rounder for a 2nd round CB… WOW.

It could be a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY long year for Bronco fans.

  5. Ugh!!!!! Its a sad day in Bronco land for all of us experts on draft day analysis. The fact is we got the best running back in the draft. It is hard to pass that up. The real so called experts in the draft gave the Bronco’s a B+ excluding the Cutler trade. They must know something the rest of us don’t. I’m going to wait before I pass judgement on anything that has happened in the past 90 days. The Broncos were on a downhill spiral and this shake up as big as it is was needed. Only time will tell if they went to far and I don’t know about the rest of you but I can’t read the future.

    Bronco fan forever!!

  6. Taking a a RB at #12 makes me think that the mini-camp in April didn’t go well. And taking a TE in the 2nd makes me think Schefler is on his way out. Torain, Hillis and Schefler will all be gone before starting day.

This was a bad bad bad bad draft. We didn’t address the NT position. In a 3-4, the NT is key. Right up there with the QB and LT on offense. I don’t get why we traded our #1 for a CB that likely would have been there later in the round. I would have felt much better if we have picked Brace instead of the CB. By trading away next year’s #1, Bowlen is signaling to fans… Forget about a franchise QB until after the new CBA is signed. Too much $$$ tied up in the high picks.

    Sigh.

  7. good observation leo.

you seemingly hit the nail on the head.

the kc sports guy on 810 made a very good point.

He said, “ask me again in 4 years and I will tell you how the draft went.”

Maybe the Bronco’s have their eyes set on some undrafted free agents.

the chiefs also have a lot of holes to fill and didn’t with the 6-7 picks they had.

Heck the chiefs got the last pick and took a kicker from south carolina, when there were seemingly so many players out there they could have used.

What is with the 3/4 defense schemes that are popping up all over the NFL. Very few colleges play that defense and most down linemen are not the “specialty size and type” to play those positions. I understand about the copycat nature of the NFL but the specific player to make a 3/4 work doesn’t grow on tree’s.

so now all these teams are going to over pay for guys that can’t make the 3/4 defense work and have to be retaught how to play there positions. Its not that different but it will take time.

Its like the spread offense college quarterback, the NFL doesn’t play the spread successfully enough yet for that type of qb to have much value except as a TE or H back guy.

I understand evolution and Darwin and in the NFL we are seeing it in action BIG TIME.

Strive for excellence, Nothing but your best.

  8. One of the comments that McDaniels made last night pretty much summed it up for me. In talking about Broncos 6th round quarterback Tom Brandstater he said the kid has “good feet, he moves well in the pocket, he can make things happen on the move.”

Here is the draft analysis of Brandstater from the Sporting News Draft Guide which works with scouts who know what they are talking about…

    Tom Brandstater

weaknesses: Is not a quick footed athlete who can avoid sacks and buy second chances. Struggles to reset and throw accurately on the move. Doesn’t handle pressure well at times.

That pretty much says it all.

  9. I always thought my fantasy drafts were bad, but I don’t feel so bad anymore.

I am wondering how high Knowshon Moreno will go in our fantasy drafts?

  10. Bad draft but McD is going to get two years no matter what!!!Seeing that Mr. Bowlen seems unwilling to spend money! He is not going to buy two coaches to sit and draw his money!!!! As for the draft why get a running back when you signed three and have four more under contract! Maybe the hoodie sends out his ‘guys’ so they can screw up the rest of the NFL to make it easier for him to win!!!!

  11. The funny thing is that the USC linebackers are schooled in the 3-4 defense and they were available but obviously not selected. Rhett Bohmar was available and reports talk about his cannon like arm and how tough he is, could have helped make up for the lost of Cutler; again no help. My only question is whether running backs are cheaper by the dozen? Why so many? Granted Moreno was the best in the draft, maybe he was taken so that the Border Town Bastards wouldn’t get him. All I can say is this is the worst draft that I have ever seen for the Broncos.

  12. I think that that everybody needs to stop and give Mcdaniels a chance and lets just see what happens. The worst we can do is not make the playoffs and we have already been doing that. Mcdaniels seems to have the respect of all the players and Mr. Bowlen and if any of you really knew football then he would have hired you. Leave the man alone and just see how the season turns out.

  13. To all you so called football analysis, how many champianship rings do you have? If anyone of you had more then two, you can can downgrade the Denvers draft. Personally I think, I know Denver got exactly what they wanted and what they needed. Don’t forget that we picked many defensive players in the free agency. I thought we sent the crybaby to Chicago, now all you crybabies that want to cry you can follow him, because when true Bronco fans come together good things will happen.

  14. The true Bronco fan has something to say,

Bronco Nation, Josh Mcdaniels brought his pride, the fake Bronco fans set her and cried. The season will begin, and we will win. Pat Bowlin and Mcdaniels will bring a superbowl win. I believe that Orton and Marshall will thrive, throwing touchdowns on every drive. Knowshon will run and score, while true Bronco fans in the Rockies will roar.

  15. My fellow Broncos Country citizens… How can you be mad about adding the best running back in the draft, one of the top five defensive ends coming out of college, and creating a very stong secondary. We also added leadership to the defensive side of the ball with Dawkins. Today we brought in a 326 pounder that has experience in the 3-4. People need to stop crying and look at the positives. We are not going to go from average to undefeated in one year. Buckle down and be true broncos fans through the bad and the good. As the barrel man would say “I AM A BRONCOS FAN!”

  16. Shanahan then Culter then the Draft… I can’t take it anymore! WTF are the Broncos doing? Please help me understand McD! PLEASE! I about to loose my blue and orange colors!!!!! Don’t make me step over to the Dark side or worst yet…. dare I say it… the gay powder blues?!

  17. As a Chiefs fan I express my thanks to McDaniels and condolences to the Bronco nation. See you guys in December. 🙂

  18. In wait & see mode… I’m just a fan and want them to win.

Will always miss Shanahan though, always. He’s a got a permanant place in my heart next to John Elway, Turtle Davis, Gradishar, Mecklenburg….

  19. I’m appalled by this teams owner. i’ve been a Bronco fan since the mid 70’s and Dan Reeves or Mike would never have let what happened happen! This guy will be history in 3 years and Jay will go the Super Bowl as a Bear. His draft choices are really really unprofessional. I can’t believe Pat is letting his new coach destroy a once Proud football team. I’m sure the players on the field must just be in shock!!
