Rocky Fever

Not to confused with the swine flu, it seems as thought the Rockies recent winning streak has sparked new enthusiasm for some fans. So, have you turned on the switch yet or do you favor a more conservative approach, like, say after they win the division?

By the way there are two really great Rockies websites that you should know about if you don’t already. Former Rocky Mountain News baseball experts Tracy Ringolsby and Jack Etkin are hammering out home run coverage at http://www.insidetherockies.com and Purple Row a terrific blog that can’t be beat.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

the Rockies have won 6 in a row and are out of last place.

Last night the Royals scored 9 runs in a single game and won.

The royals have lost 23 out of 29, but at least if they win today they will be out of the AL Central cellar.

there is that word IF again. Seems the whole world revolves around IF, anymore.

Win or lose you can’t beat a day at the ballpark no matter the teams record.

Better move on, Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  2. Drew that raises a great question doesn’t it!? In this day and age with economic woes and an ever shrinking entertainment budget. Should a fan spend his hard earned money on a sporting event if his hometown team is constantly losing. Do you want to go to the ballpark to be disappointed time after time or would you rather spend your money doing something more enjoyable for you.

  3. Do sports players, front office or care what the public thinks? Nah! If the Rockies do not work out here they will move to the next big city without a franchise. Bottom line end of topic, a dark reality is true. Never personal, just good business.

I carpool with someone in the morning and I happend to notice a man with a shirt, tie and, dress shoes on holding a sign that said “Student with 4.0 GPA needs job”. I did not read the rest of the sign but I think everyone gets the big picture. A few days ago I was upset about Drew doing free work for 9News. I understood his point of the subject of a soon depression to come. We all know that the government will not help the public with jobs(even though the second coming promised us things will get better). The answer is not the future we need money and jobs NOW! I keep wondering when my last day of my temporary job will end and I am in that position of holding a sign begging for work. OMG I am scared! The main idea is: What are we as a socity going to do to resort to getting money? Survival of the fittest? I dont know but I am a little restless.

  4. Drew are any former Rocky Mountain News staffers blogging about the Avs? Decent (unbiased and league wide) hockey news is hard to come by in Denver.

  5. Drew,

I saw this Cartoon last night on the news. I think that it is very fitting for the majority of sport fans of not only the Rockies but all the teams in Denver, except maybe the Broncos but I bet this theory will get put to the test this season. Anyhow, we don’t pay attention until they are winning and then anything is possible. I always wonder what it would be like to live in a city that bleeds hometown colors through thick and thin not just when it is “thick”. To have a packed bandwagon the whole time would be amazing. I think there are a couple of things that contribute to this in Denver, there are a lot of “transplants” and there is so much to do outdoors here in Colorado. If the home team is winning then it is a good thing but if not it doesn’t really matter because there is the attitude; “I’m not really from here or I would rather be climbing a 14’er.” I did happen to watch the game yesterday and listen to a couple of the interviews after the game and at least the players believe they can win again. I think that attitude plays a major role in sports and in life; attitude is a small thing that makes a big difference.

Well I guess I better put my soapbox away to make room on the band wagon πŸ™‚ Although I don’t believe that a seven game win streak will cause that much of a stir especially because it is still June, there are plenty of fish still to catch and the golf courses are still green.

Hope they make it 8 tonight.

  6. At what point does pragmatism entail jumping off the bandwagon?

The Rox are stinking it up this year. A win streak in a losing season interests me to the extent I follow their season, but it does not make me rush out to buy a ticket. I don’t love them any less, but they ain’t getting my money, nor are they getting my eyes. Sorry. I earn my money and value my time. If they want a piece of either, they gotta show for it.

My love of baseball gets me to enough games each year, but seriously, how is it reasonable to want to pay money to regularly see a losing team?

At the same time, $100+ seats for the Broncos… not paying. By the time I’m done with parking, tickets, snacks, etc., I throw away some serious money for three hours of sitting in a stadium yelling my head off… I can do most of that at home.

Nuggets – 100+ games of basketball every season with most games having virtually no meaning… not interested. I loved watching Denver go so deep in the playoffs this year, but I still would not pay to watch any of their regular season games.

Avs – hockey priced me out of the market in 2001. Again 100 games, no significance to most games, and now a team in a serious case of rebuilding… I don’t want to pay to see it.

Maybe I am a cheapskate, but it does not mean I love any Denver team any more or less. My degree of involvement does ebb and flow with many factors, as I imagine does many fans’. Quality product at a reasonable price fills seats. At this point, there is not much of that combination seen in Denver or in most sports markets.

  7. Mike,

You’re absolutely right. There is a return on the dollar that people expect with discretionary income. It’s one of the reasons that the video game industry is holding on strong in the midst of this depression. For 50 dollars you get often times months of enjoyment as opposed to a few hours of a sporting event where, let’s face it, if your team loses, it wasn’t so much fun after all. Great comments.

  8. Mike,

I’ll check back here and let you know where Rick Sadowski is. He was our Avalanche beat reporter at the Rocky, and a very good one. Often times Rick’s stuff wasn’t always given the amount of space he deserved. I think at times our sports coverage was a bit unbalanced in certain areas and I often felt Rick got the short end of that. I’ll let you know where Rick is. I do know he was doing some freelance for NHL.com
