A Tribute to Fathers

A Fathers Day Tribute Illustration I did for two great articles on ESPN.com. There’s one by Hannah Storm and another by Mike Greenberg

This cartoon is dedicated to my best friends, and great Fathers all, Meredith, Joel, Mike and Larry. They know a bit about raising daughters and stargazing.

  1. This…. THIS…..!!!! Drew you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Wee little tale I shall tell:

I’m a huge Notre Dame fan. Odd, I’ve been told, considering I was born & raised in Denver. Most people expect me to be either a CU or a CSU fan.

The reason why I’m a ND fan (Gold & Blue Through & Through) is very simple.

My parents got divorced when I was 3 years old. One of the things they did differently then most people I know with divorced parents, was my dad insisted on living within bike riding distance of my mother. That way, my brother and I could visit any time we wanted, or go over on our scheduled days with ease.

When my dad wasn’t working (he was a police officer in Englewood for 30+ years), he would often call us up on Saturday mornings with the same comment: “The game is about to come on, you coming over?”

Most of the time, I went over (my brother, not so much – his loss, I think). And there I would spend my Saturday afternoons, watching Notre Dame with my Dad, while he taught me all about football.

It’s one of the memories I cherish the most, and something I tried to do with my son – sadly, he doesn’t care for football as much as I do. But I always know that no matter what, I had those precious moments with my dad.

    🙂

  2. My dad, too, spent time with his first child who turned out to be a girl, watching, playing, and discussing sports. I have such vivid memories of him telling the defense to break someone’s leg (tongue in cheek), tyring to explain some of the finer points of boxing, and playing baseball in the field across the street with me, my two brothers, and the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. Understanding what it meant to me to go to my first Bronco game with my uncle instead of either of my brothers. Taking us to Denver Bears games. The fun of going to his softball games at Crowe Field and City Park. The exciting news that his postal route now included Bronco headquarters when it was over off I25. And, of course, the countless hours spent in bowling alleys, watching and teaching! Thanks, Drew, for the walk down memory lane and your wonderful work. And, thanks, Dad, for all this and more!

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

Wow two great cartoons in one day. Nice job drew. some of my most cherished memories are sitting on floor in the family room with my daughter and watching football. we watched the super bowl together and would make up our own words to the redskins fight song. You know “hail to the redskins, fight for old DC!” and then just laugh and laugh. She is now almost 3 decades old and we still laugh about our times together.

Our son and I created our own memories. Yes I went to softball games and band concerts and choir and soccer games with our daughter. and loved every minute of each game. One of the funniest times we had when she was a senior in high school, was helping her study spanish and my son study french… I taught them what came to known as rural missouri spanish and french. just laugh and laugh and laugh.

and watching our son mature and grow into the man he has become is a source of unlimited pleasure to my wife and me. He is actually a reflection of us both.

The memories that we created together will live with me until the end. Hopefully those same great feelings will remain with them and there children forever!!! Anybody can create a child, it takes something special to be a father!!

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best

    Gene

  4. Thank you Drew! I am forwarding this cartoon to my Dad – it sums up our relationship perfectly!

My Dad and I have shared Broncos season tickets for many years and I truly look forward to Broncos Sundays with him. We also have a shared love for hockey and have traveled to other states and in one trip to another country just to see our favorite hockey teams play. One of those trips was to see my beloved Bruins play in Boston and my dad was the first person to text me the other night to celebrate the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup.

Tim McGraw once said it best – Dads get overwhelmed when they have a daughter because they think they won’t be able to relate to them. But it doesn’t matter what you do with them as long as you spend time with them. That’s what the daughter will remember.

    Best wishes,

    Aylish
