An NFL Lockout

This is my perfect idea of an NFL Lockout. Anybody up for joining me?

Another day of not being able to get to comments. I am so sorry. I had a three deadline day, which believe me is nothing like a three Martini day, except, of course, they make you feel about the same way. Especially the morning after. So please bear with me. Oh and Happy St Patty’s day to you. I’m so glad Patrick Roy got his own holiday. Oh. My bad. Wrong Patrick. Wear green. Just don’t drink it! Me? I think I’ll put on some U2, Great Big Sea or some Enter the Haggis and maybe have a pint o’ Guinness. Sounds Irish to me. You all have any special plans or ways you celebrate the day? I wanna know.

  1. I Love St Patrick’s Day ! Being 100% Irish it always Rocks ! Plus my brothers birthday we have lots of fun ! Then a longstanding party with great friends to cap off a great green day !! Keep up the superb work, Drew !

  2. Dear Drew,

Sadly the closest thing I have to celebrating St. Patricks day is when I get into the shower and wash myself with Irish Spring.

For years I use to celebrate St. Patty’s day by participating with my performing troupe in teh Denver St. Paddy’s Day Parade. Most of the troupe would be on the float performing their routines. I would normally walk next to the float to attract attention to it. Believe me seeing a 245 pound man waking through the streets wearing only a green towel around his waist (I did have the towel tucked into some swimming trunks to avoid an wardrobe malfunction.) did draw a lot of attention. Especially the year when the temp was in the 20’s/30’s. I walked the whole 5 miles except when it was my turn to perform on the float to the tune of Splish Splash. I miss those days. I still get a chuckle when the people who ran the parade gave me a special plaque. one year (the year I did the parade when it was 20-30 degrees) for “Best Spirit in the parade” However since they didn’t know my name they awarded to “The guy in the green towel.”. Almost made it worth coming down sick a couple of days later.

Thought you might find the tale amusing especially since its true

    All the best

    Louis

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

Don’t worry about getting to the comments section. Getting your work done is how you keep the boat afloat. I don’t really get into st pats day. Used to work for a liquor wholesaler and we had to make sure no one ran out of baileys or jameson. so yes we delivered. took the fun out of the day. A lady I know takes off the day before to decorate her house all in green and get her leprechaun outfit ready for another year. Its a great day and its also the start of the big dance.

haven’t heard much about the NFL which is wear it belongs, on the back shelf. and yes…chad ochocinco is getting a try out with sporting KC…its in the kc star. I couldn’t believe it but hey you don’t see many fat soccer players anymore. even the goalies are in shape. I guess all that running pays off!

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  4. The good thing about multiple deadlines: They’re evidence your services are in demand!

Good music for today is some Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly – Irish-flavored punk! Or, if you need something more contemplative, Clannad and Enya. That’s how this Muskogee Creek Indian celebrates the day. That, and tickle a redhead.

  5. Kay,

Sounds like a true Irish adventure. I love Celtic music, so I’m sure I’ll spend some of my day listening to that. Today I’m going to work on a WordPress website for a client and some Baseball designs for the Drew Store. Though I might end up playing a bit of Baseball on the PSP. Yesterday was deadline crazy. So I might need a little r and r. Happy St. Patty’s Day!

  6. Louis,

Your story is priceless. We need pix to add to the ambience! I mean, you and Barrelman. Who knew? I think you need to reprise the roll, just not in the freezing cold!

  7. Gene,

You always have the greatest advice and insight. Thanks for taking the pressure off of me. I love to communicate with everyone, but when the schedule gets crazy it’s hard. So I’ll make comments when the schedule permits and let you all add your thoughts and stories as always. Never thought about how delivering Baileys could impact your holiday but it makes perfect sense. I actually grew to not enjoy the Broncos long playoff runs for the same reason. It meant incredibly long hours of work for everyone in the Sports Department. After the second Broncos Super Bowl win I really was close to burn out.

Ochocinco and soccer. Two words that I never thought I’d see in the same sentence.

  8. Badger,

I’ll have to try the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. I’ve heard a bit of the Molly. I’ll have to give them another listen. Celtic music is really one of my favorite genres. I listen to Robin Marks “Revival in Belfast” (Spitirual) a lot and love bands like Great Big Sea (Newfoundland) and the Chieftains and the Dubliners. I also love the work of Dougie Maclean (Scotland) and Rich Mullins (American Christian songwriter heavily influenced by Celtic sounds). I’ve recently discovered “Enter the Haggis” though they are out of Toronto. Music is really my first love. If I could have made a living as a songwriter I probably wouldn’t have ended up drawing cartoons. Thanks for the tips, Badgerman!

  9. To quote Bruce Dickinson…..”Can I play with madness?”

I’m rooting for all the West Coast teams.

  10. Drew–

If you’re up for another music suggestion for St. Pat’s, check out Albannach. I know that they’re Scottish, and darn proud of it, but they sound great! They’ve played quite a few Celtic events here in the US.

  11. Love the “lockout!” Provided a much needed laugh! And sense of empowerment, oddly. Wonder if I can find any Killians Red about town today?

  12. Great cartoon Drew! Couldn’t agree with you more! Especially after Adrian Peterson (MN Vikings) made that stupid comment about the NFL treating players like slaves the other day. That “sealed the deal” for me on ignoring everything NFL. The man makes more in one game than most of us make in several years of working 40+ hours a week. ANYWAY…. lol

On to all things Irish! 🙂 Half of me is of Irish-descent. My maternal grandma was born in County Galway. My maternal grandpa was a first generation Irish-American. Mom has instilled a love of our Irishness in me and my siblings – whether it be through culture (art, music, literature, history) and food. When it worked in her schedule as a single parent and full-time nurse, my mom would make a traditional Irish meal to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: corned beef, cabbage, colcannon, Irish soda bread, peas and carrots, would be our supper. For dessert, she made an Irish triffle (with Jameson-soaked ladyfingers as an ingredient), along with Irish Coffee and Bailey’s Irish Cream. For all of March, and longer, Celtic music fills her house. She even has a set of bookshelves dedicated to everything Ireland.

In the past, I’ve prepared her corned beef and cabbage recipe – being that I live 80 miles away from her. I, too, love my Celtic music….the Chieftans, Irish Rovers, among others. (Tonight, I’m thanking Pandora for their great selection of all music Celtic.) My heart and soul are filled with many memories of visits with my grandma about her homeland – her struggles, and endured persecutions, experienced as a young lady, and the arduous journey she took to get down on bended-knee to kiss the soil at Ellis Island, upon the ship’s docking at port.

On this St. Patrick’s Day, as every in the past, my thoughts are not only about my heritage, they are about my family, my heart. Wish I was with them in body, not simply in spirit.

  13. Peg,

An absolutely wonderful St Patrick’s Day Tribute. A very stirring and moving account of your family’s heritage and your life growing up. It sounds like a book (hint, hint). I haven’t had corned beef and cabbage in a long long time. And the dessert sounds quite memorable. Occasionally I’ll have a bit of Baileys or Tullamore Dew, an Irish Whiskey that I learned of from Dan Fogelberg. Very good in very small quantities. When I venture to San Diego for Comic-con I often convene with several other cartoonist friends to a little Irish Pub known as “The Field” to enjoy the most amazing Guinness Stout on tap.

Thanks for sharing, Peg. Really great stuff.

  14. Drew,

Ah, Tullamore Dew. Nice whiskey. I sure miss Dan Fogelberg. Definitely gone too soon. Thankfully, we have his music to remember him by – and you, the memories of times spent with your friend.

Thanks for the kind comments, my friend. I get the “hint.” 😉

  15. YES! let’s lockout the NFL and the players. The Madness will get me thru March. Now to find something for April and May.
