BCS stands for…

Uncategorized

I still have yet to watch a bowl game. I saw snippets of snow at the Sun Bowl, and couldn’t bare to watch UTEP lose to BYU. Beyond that, I didn’t even turn on a bowl game. There, I said it. I just haven’t been able to get into it at all. I went to see True Grit on New Years day. Much better than any bowl game. And with TCU getting totally snubbed by the BCS for a chance at the number one spot I’ve really lost interest in the whole bowl thing. And I hate waiting around until January 10th to crown a mythical national champion, rendering the Jan 1, 2 and 3rd bowls totally worthless. What ever happened to making them all play on New Years anyway? Oh, right. It’s all about the money. It always is.

Hey Everybody!!

I’ve made a few little tweaks in the sidebar area. There’s a cool Twitter Feed and the share icons are larger as well. Nothing major but just some tune up work.

I’m hoping to add some store items soon. A few t-shirt designs and some greeting cards and things. I apologize to anyone who was hoping I’d get a calendar together by years end. My schedule as well as the poll results I got on it in early December made me rethink the idea. When you go through self publishing, in this case, on demand publishing, the price has to be right as well. So I’m hoping as my site grows I can do a few things to supplement the income revenues.

Have a great weekend. I’ll try to post my Tribune cartoon sometime Saturday.

  1. Dear Mr. Litton,

I’m about to say something that might be considered controversial. If you think they are please feel free to remove these comments.

I look at the BCS along the lines of certain aspects of 1950’s & 60’s life in the south. Back then you had signs like “Blacks only” or “Whites only” for things like water fountains and restraunts.

When it comes to the BCS championship the NCAA might as well hang up a sign that say’s “Major Conferences only” or “No Non-automatic qualifiers allowed”. Just look at the way the non-automatic qualifers were treated this seaston. TCU and Boise State kept winning every week when a #1 or #2 team would lose some lower ranked team would mysteriously be jumped ahead of TCU & Boise State. Then we would be fed a bunch of B.S. that the jump was made because “the (major) conference was better than the non-AQ conference. That these conferences were “inferior”. I have no doubt that if Auburn and/or Oregon had slipped in the final weeks of the season the NCAA in their (HA!) wisdom would have found some way to justify a one loss team in the championship game before daring to let TCU in.

What makes the logic of the denial of teams like TCU this year and TCU/Boise State last year is dumber than Mortimer Snerd* Is that in the major bowl games that I’m aware of the Non-automatic qualifiers have been these blessed major conference teams 4 out of 5 times. So that shoots that sacred cow right there.

For the record Mr. Litton I’ve watched exactly 2 bowl games myself. The one where Navy lost (because I’m ex-navy myself) and the Boise State game because I had to see how they were going to perform after the Nevada loss. Other than that when it omes to bowl games I really couldn’t give a (bleep, bleep, bleep)

    all the best

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

I thought I was the only one that had to get out and DO something on new years day. So what did you think about the remake of True Grit? Unlike you I have caught bits and pieces of some bowl games. I think its silly to wait until the 10th. you’re right- its about the money.

the only thing that is going to change the wrongheadedness of the BCS is if the audience for the game on the 10th is nowhere to be found. If more people watch weather channel updates than the game the advertisers will realize that they have made a multi million dollar mistake and will pressure those school presidents and chancellors to put the BCS toothpaste back in the tube.

I guess the same thing happened last year with some no account bowl as a lead in to big game. The worst part is that the game is NOT on a major network like ABC, NBC or CBS but ABC’s red headed step child espn.

There can be too much of a good thing and the BSC is proving it again this year.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. I agree 100% Drew, haven’t seen any of the bowl games and frankly I don’t miss it a bit. Just wish that I and anyone else interested could show the ncaa and the bowl sponsors how little we care about their “games.”

  4. The BCS and the NCAA, i.e. DUMB and DUMBER. The delayed suspension of the TAT-5 Ohio State players sealed the deal for me. The head of the Sugar Bowl begging the NCAA to delay the suspensions, pathetic and the NCAA going along with it, even more pathetic. I will not watch any more BCS/NCAA games, period. I have more important things to do such as sleep. Mortimer Snerd has more intelligence, more honor, more integrity than the BCS/NCAA combined.

  5. stanbob,

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to who had little to no interest in this years bowls.

  6. Louis,

Feel free to call me Drew. My dad was Mr. Litton. Anyway, not sure I totally agree with your analogy. I mean the time you site in American history is one that was horrific and shameful. And that was serious real life stuff. This is just a stupid bowl system, though I do agree it’s trapped in another time and another era. It’s run by the usual network of the Good Old Boys and they don’t want their revenue streams tampered with.

  7. Gene,

I really liked the remake of True Grit. But I’m a sucker for westerns. The original True Grit was the first and only movie I remember going to with my grandmother. When John Wayne uttered the “fill your hands you son of a bitch” line, I knew my very Southern Baptist grandmother would be mortified. Especially with her 10 year old grand son in tow. we survived somehow but I know she must have prayed I had gone temporarily deaf or that I wouldn’t ask her about it after the movie was over.

The BCS is a mess. Not as bad as the House as Senate, but close.

    Have a great weekend bud!

  8. GMFO-

If she were alive to see this one it probably would have killed her. My wife thought is was too graphic in the violence and maybe it was. AMC is showing John Wayne movies all day saturday- and they act like they are going to show the original true grit with the Duke.

you take care, sounds like we might be headed out your way next weekend as our son and his wife are getting ready to move into their first house!

  9. Will you do a cartoon about the Seahawks upsetting New Orleans in the playoffs?

  10. One of the main arguments against a playoff system is that students will be forced to miss class time due to an extended postseason. However, I never hear…

    A) why a bowl season that lasts until the second week of January isn’t considered “extended”.

    B) why four or two teams playing extra playoff games over a holiday class break is considered an academic tremor, and

    C) why the NCAA apparently could care less about the poor Div. III, II, and FCS athletes who do play a month-long tournament.

I put down a comment a few weeks back with my projected tournament field. I just also happen to have an XBox and NCAA 11. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

  11. Dear Drew, (feels wierd calling you Drew after months of Mr. Litton)

Maybe my analogy wasn’t the best one I could think of. Your’s of a “Good ol’ Boy” was better. My original analogy was the only one I could think of that people might be able to understand. That is why when I started my original thoughts I wanted to let you you know that if you thought it was an improper statement you could remove it.

You are right. What happened in the 60’s that I used for my analogy was a shameful period of time. You’re also right that sports shouldn’t be that serious. However I’m sure you’ll agree that too many people take sports that seriously or even worse.

Mayb next year they could rename the BCS the GBS (The Good (ol’) Boy Syster)

    all the best,

    Louis
