Dispatches from the Drawing Board

  • Today marks 3 years since the Rocky Mountain News stopped the presses. Always a day of remembrance for me and still a bit solemn, yet I can’t help but be proud for the time I spent there and the work that I shared with my fellow comrades in arms. For all of my colleagues, who just like this cartoon illustration, always seemed to kick the ass of the Big Dogs in town, this one is for you! Viva La Rocky!
  • Changes are coming. Today I sign the papers to put my house up for sale. It will take some prep to get the place ready, but it’s time to downsize and sail to new horizons. I’m not quite sure what it means yet. THE BLOG WILL CONTINUE! Nothing changes here at DrewLitton.com. It’s just become a challenge to maintain a mortgage, pay health insurance and navigate the price of living in Denver on a single freelance salary. It comes down to dollars and sense really (pun intended). I’d love to remain in Denver but I’m entertaining thoughts of Austin, Portland, Maine, and Albuquerque, as well. I can’t imagine life without the Broncos, Rockies, Buffs, Rams, Avs or Nuggets so no matter where I end up, I will hopefully be able to keep the clients I have who have allowed me to draw cartoons about the Colorado sports I love since the News closing in 2009.  So the next few months will be an adventure. Thoughts and prayers (not to mention job offers) are more than welcome.
  • Today’s cartoon was actually one I did recently for ESPN.com and a great column by Roy Johnson about little dogs in the NCAA tournament. Teams like CU who clobbered Cal last night for instance. There are always the little teams that surprise. For me that would be TWC over Kentucky for the National Title in 1966.

  1. I can relate to the expense of Denver living: A studio in West Aurora for $650 a month? As far as destinations go, have you thought about OKC? Inexpensive to live here, kinda short drive to Texas, warm weather…although sportswise, it’s all Sooner Football, all the time.

This site, The Onion and Deadspin are my daily reads – keep up the great work!

  2. Drew: How about moving out state a bit… Cost of living is less in Pueblo, Akron, Brighton, Erie and so on….

But Austin? Living there makes sense but the city is surrounded by the rest of Texas and Texans.

  3. Drew,

Please don’t move to far away… I love you perspective on Colorado sports. You are the biggest thing I missed about the Rocky and felt very fortunate when you started this website.

  4. Even though I don’t live in Denver, it is sad to think of you not there. But totally can understand the economics of the situation. Best wishes for your future! Never leave us without your work, wit, and slant on the world, no matter where you go. Go little dogs! And Gene, too.

  5. PORTLAND, COME TO PORTLAND!!! I WANT TO MEET YOU!!! 🙂

Seriously though, as much as I bitch about the weather here (and I bitch about it, A LOT), Portland OR does have a lot to offer it and is a pretty nice town. People here are very friendly and we have some really good beer.

Just be prepaired to sit back and laugh at the Portlandians when it snows. It’s a riot. 🙂

  6. Drew–

It’s kind of sad to hear you’re leaving Denver. You define the sports community there as much as the Broncos, Avs, Rox, and Nuggets do. However, cost of living is a compelling reason to look elsewhere.

I had to smile about this cartoon… it reminded me of something my brother is fond of saying. You pictured the result perfectly!

  7. Drew, my heart just broke to hear you are leaving Denver.

You know how nice Texas and Texans can be… even to Coloradans. Even as a native Denverite, I still hear the call to return to the Lone Star State. A couple of friends moved to Portland their last year and they love the place. Not sure about the other places, but you may run into Bugs Bunny making wrong turns in Albuquerque. Maybe Gene can sell you on Omaha??

God speed no matter where you go!

    Mike

  8. GMFO-

I have seen too many little dogs chase the old big dog down the street. Same with the little guy taking on the world- our son calls it little big man syndrome. Even his dog runs from the little heel chewers!

ON another front- there are a lot of houses for sale in exotic Omaha. Yes we have the internet and get a lot of ESPN and you can catch altitude and the rockies of the satelite from here.

One more thing- tomorrow is my independence day- I GET TO GO HOME!!! It will have been 26 days and yes I am anxious to get home to my own chair, couch, food and bed! Yes I get to go to outpatient P/T- but I am going to do that from HOME!

Thank you to everyone for all the prayers and positive thoughts that came our way. You don’t know just how grateful I am for each and everyone of you. You positive thoughts made it easy to say-

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best!!!

    Gene

  9. Wish you the best Drew. Dnnt stop this blog or your work. Seems to be one of the few sane things in the world and we really need the laughs. Prayers coming your way my friend

  10. Just a note to everyone. I’m not sure yet if I will leave Denver. I have to see how the finances play out. I WANT to stay here in Colorado. I do, I do!

  11. Drew, I sure hope you don’t leave Denver. I really do enjoy your perspective on Colorado sports!

  12. Meaghan, fellow ExColoradan, Portlander, and lover of Drew Litton, where are you in the metro area?

Drew, now that Gene is going home, we can direct our energy to you getting everything you want and need to stay in Denver.

  13. Gene!!!!!

You just made my day. I am so excited that you are going home. You have had such an amazing recovery, thus far. Home is the best place for you to be, as you continue to get your strength and energy back.

Drew… you know my thoughts about wanting to you follow your heart, and stay in Colorado. 😉 Colorado Springs and Pueblo aren’t bad. My sister and I checked out real estate in our hometown when we were there last week. Compared to other regions in the state, it is actually less expensive – which surprised the heck out of me! If you need any info, let me know.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, my friend.

  14. Drew,

I am also saddened to hear that you might be leaving Colorado. Your artistic and literary contributions are such a major part of the local sports scene. Thank you so much for this website and all you do! The internet would be far less interesting without it. Keep fighting for your CO residency man! I think your cartoons are so awesome because you are an expression of a great place full of unique people. I wish you all the best, because you are truly deserving of it.

    Viva La Rocky,

    Vince
