Bush League: The Future of the Heisman

Uncategorized

I’ve weighed in on the Reggie Bush-Heisman trophy controversy with a pair of cartoons. The first one deals with how I think that winning the Heisman will never be the same. It will come with unbelievable scrutiny. And I’ll say this; Reggie Bush is the first guy to forfeit his Heisman. Don’t ya think O.J. is long overdue on that.

The second cartoon on the subject can be found here on ESPN.com. I think it’s ridiculous that the kid gets all the blame and pays the ultimate price while the administration at USC gets off totally free. Yeah, the school got nailed with NCAA penalties, how about the guys who were actually in charge during the whole mess. Why aren’t their feet held to the fire?

  1. I will say it again- Bush should not have given his back and O.J. should not give his back. No one can take from O.J. the fact that he might be the greatest pure running back in the history of the NFL. No one can take from him what he accomplished at USC- and none of that has anything to do with whether or not he killed his exwife (which by the way, he WAS found NOT GUILTY.) Right or wrong, the verdict cleared him.

I have nearly had it with the fiction writers, the talking heads, and the stuffed shirts that are directing them all. Put me on the Sports Reporters, give me a radio show, give me a column in some big paper or Sports Illustrated- I got 3 or 4 buddies that would love to get in on it as well, then maybe folks would HEAR what the working man thinks; and not the $100,000 per year hoity toity that has season tickets to every pro team in his town.

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

we really don’t know what all was involved in reggie bush’s time in college.

there are lots of reports or wrongdoing on one side of the scale and denials a plenty on the other side of the scale.

not only should the school be penalized, the player and the coach involved should also pay some price. Are you listening, Lane Kiffin?

I tend to agree with James although being an illegible player is one of the qualifications and IF the allegations are true, Mr Bush was not. OJ’s actions happened long after his career as did the charges against Paul Hornug. In those cases returning the trophy would be a hollow gesture.

Oh and by the way, OJ was found guilty in the civil trail of wrongful death. The main reason for his guilt in the civil trail was the lower bar required to convict- preponderance of the evidence ( more likely than not) as opposed to the beyond reasonable doubt that is the standard in the criminal process.A few ignorant jurors is all that stood between OJ and the death penalty, but that is for another day.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. Some good discussion topics the last few days, Drew. Is character one of the qualifications for the Heisman? I agree that the school and especially the coaches should somehow be held more accountable, but how do these student athletes not know that what they are doing is not acceptable? They need to own up to the fact that they were trying to get away with something, accept that they got caught. And it is so unacceptable that the coaches keep saying they didn’t realize what was going on with this kind of thing and with the whole steroid situation.

  4. Dear Mr. Litton,

This whole Bush fiasco reminds me of a comedy routine years I heard years ago from a southern comedian named Jerry Clower. He talked about how (at the time of the recording) the NCAA rulebook for recruiting was over 500 pages long.

According to Clower that rulebook could be condensed to 1 sentence that would say pretty much what was being said in the over 500 pages. This was the one sentence.

“A prospective NCAA athlete can be provided with NOTHING except (a place to live), books, and tuition…..period.”

He then goes on to say

“You have any trouble understanding that?”

    All the best

    Louis
