This cartoon is out now at the news stands and bookstores in the Denver Metro area. It looks so much prettier in print. So rush now and buy a copy!

I need your help!

I’m still stunned by the decision by the Denver Post to cut 21 comic strips on Monday. Newspapers are in the midst of incredible turmoil right now. But there comes a time when readers (those who still read papers ) have to stand up for the content they enjoy or lose it forever. I urge you today to call or e-mail, or write a letter to the Post. Let them know that comics are important and you love reading them and you want the strips reinstated. Or we stand to lose an American institution: the comic strip. Thanks.

Now about that header

I’m sure by now you’re growing weary of my tinkering. I know I am. I just want to get down to getting you great content everyday. But I also want this site to have some pop and sizzle and some fun branding. The start of the branding can’t take place until I settle on the title header at the top (the thing with the football field). So again I need some feedback. Do you like it, do you not like it and if so, why. it’d be a big help. Thanks.

  1. Like I said before Drew, the header is close, just needs to be tweeked, just needs something that makes it pop. Maybe change the text \, it blends too much with the field lines? I am not sure, just needs that X factor.

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

Love the cartoon. You might want to add that if you are the Governor of Colorado you might want to avoid riding in groups. they said it was a good thing he was wearing his helmet, no advise needed.

Broken ribs are very painful, but I’ll bet he is back on the bike by Tax Day.

IN your other comments section you said money always wins and you are right. Its a lesson we should have learned early on in our lives.

The Omaha paper dropped 8 comics and added 4 newer ones, Fort Knox, Get Fuzzy etc.

The editor of the paper asked for comments from readers and was surprised at the response, so much so that he had to bring back Non Sequitor and one other comic.

It does work to write the editor and complain, but use your manners.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. ETC,

Also you mentioned taking care of shareholders.

I have worked for companies that have made their main goal taking care of shareholders, to their own demise.

I always thought that if you took care of your customers, the shareholders would be happy with the results.

    But what do I know!

  4. Gene,

As always, you are right on the money. I think that’s one for the fundamental problems with the way Newspapers are run. They don’t think of readers as “customers”. Which, of course, they are.

  5. Ok, it’s taken me this long to figure out how to comment. How many of us only take a paper for the comics? A lot. I used to read the sports page, but the paper here in Oregon must get their sports from the internet, sucks. Unless, of course, it’s about the Blazers or the latest Duck to be arrested. I grew up with the Rocky Mountain News, never liked the Post and dropping the comics is a huge mistake.

  6. Sorry Sherrie. I didn’t know that was an issue. I’ll put it on my list to tweak. Great comment by the way

  7. Hi Drew,

    Love the comic.

I like the header, but it only relates to one sport and you draw and connect with so much more…football, baseball, basketball, hockey, golf, olympics–a cartoonist for all sports seasons!

Kind of reminds me the old comedy routine of Fibber McGee’s closet, with all the sports equipment falling out.

Personally, the Rocky was my paper, never liked the Post and dropping the comics is a big mistake–that’s half the reason to buy a Sunday paper. cj

  8. Drew – Two of the comics that is going to go bye-bye is Prickly City and Mallard Fillmore. I continue to be amazed on how long they have survived. Conservative comics are not funny.

  9. Drew,

I was thinking about the header. The rhino is the centerpiece, it is from which all things flow…

You could have an animated header. Keep the rhino where he is, but have him actually drawing generic players for different sports. When the rhino finishes drawing, the player jumps off the page and runs across the header. In the current header, the player would jump from the page and run right to left.

You could even have the background change for each type of field/rink/floor used in each running player’s sport.

My $.01. Not sure this idea comes to full value.

  10. It is not your set up, it’s me and my lack of intuition regarding all computer. Love Mike’s suggestion for the header! But I like this one, also.

  11. I appreciate the work that you have put in, in this page. Really good, also I wish to quote a few lines from this article in my site, I will give a link back to this article. Again.. it is really a good work.

    Thanks
