We’ve been having fun all summer long

-Beach Boys-

That’s still one of my favorite songs of summer. The Beach Boys defined the season for so many of us who grew up in the 60’s. It defined all that summer was and should be. I’d love to hear your favorite song/s of summer. Your memories of “grillin and chillin”.

Things have slowed down on the sports front for the time being.  I feel like it’s good opportunity to take a bit of a break from the daily posting that I do here. So From now until September 6th, I plan to post just three days a week, Monday-Wednesday and Friday. There will be occasions when there might be more, but never less than three a week. There also might be Mondays when the cartoon isn’t posted until noon. I’ll put a message up when that is the case. Posting at noon will allow me to not have to work on Sunday, which will give me a two day weekend, something I haven’t had since the News closed in 2009.

This “time-out” will give me some much needed time to charge the batteries creatively and to work on some other projects I’ve been wanting to get to (a webcomic for one thing). It will also afford me some time to “reinvent” myself a bit, to adapt to the ever changing world where newspapers are no longer the most viable long term solution to paying my mortgage.

To be honest with you, I’m scared to take this break . I don’t want to lose a single one of you who stop here during your busy days to view my latest cartoon. And I really, really don’t want to lose the wonderful friends I’ve met here. But the time just seems right for a “pit stop”.  I’ve been drawing sports cartoons at least five days a week for 29 years. Sometimes we just need a breather. I can only hope and pray you indulge me this time to recharge, reinvent and,  yes, listen to a few Beach Boys songs.

God Bless,                                                                                                                                                                                                      Drew

  1. Wait… you’re only going to post a free cartoon THREE times a week and you’re worried about losing your fans? I can only speak for myself, but I can’t imagine anyone is going to disappear while you recharge. So many of us have “known” you and your work for so long you have become a part of who we are, our habits, our culture (Rich Karlis ‘toon, anyone?).

Drew, please take your break and know that your fans will still be here MWF as well as the other four days of the week.

  2. Dear Drew,

I would like to echo the thoughts of Mike. If anybody DESERVES to take a week or two off you proved it in one statement. Quote: “I

  3. Good Morning from Omaha,

Its hard to believe any one does anything for 29 years. Its a good time to take a break what with the doldrums in the sports world. The NFL is either going to solve its problems or talk themselves to death and the NBA is going to head down the same road.

Enjoy your summer. I like to tease my wife that after the 4th of July she has about a month before she has to report back to school. She has lots of projects to complete this summer. Some she planned and others just seem to pop up. This year its the kitchen and the long story, shortened, burned some parsley in a microwave, ruined the microwave, new microwave installer said new microwave was too close to the top of the stove….wall came down?

I will always be hanging out at this corner and who knows … the NFL may settle, the Royals and the Rockies may get hot and move to the top of their divisions and you, Drew, will actually get some time for yourself. Only one of these things is going to happen for sure, and its involves you.

Remember if it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense and with all the work you have been doing its time to start making some money or at least rediscover the joy that comes from entertaining people with your thoughts and ability to draw them out.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  4. Drew,

You deserve this break, my friend. More than anyone I know. I think it is a good idea to step back, relax, take stock of things, and develop a new game plan, from time-to-time. Summer is a great time to rejuvenate the heart and soul. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with; and I’m excited to see the web-comic. Everything will fall into place as opportunities present themselves to you. You’re in my thoughts and prayers.

  5. Drew:

Enjoy your semi-break. Nobody yelled at Cal Ripken when he broke his streak, and that only went on for half as long as yours. We’d only get upset if you dropped off completely.

  6. Drew–

I’m going to echo the sentiments of the previous posters. No one is gonna get upset with you taking a much-needed break to recharge. Especially if you realize you need a break before burnout sets in. A lot of my favorite webcomics update M-W-F. Not a problem in my book.

A lot of people are having to reinvent themselves these days, too. You seem to have a great handle on how to deal with the changes in your chosen vocation.

  7. If Peter King on CNNSI.com can take four weeks off, you can certainly drop to three cartoons a week to recharge. Hell; go take a week off and go on a cruise or something, if you can. You can have just as much fun with one of the cheap inboard cabins as you can in one of the executive suites. I surprised my family with one this past April and we had a great time.

  8. Holy S—-! I don’t care what all these other people who are pretending to be understanding and caring are saying. If you go to three days a week, I will never look at this sight again, ever. Well, maybe, once and a while, ok, maybe once a week…….oh, who am i kidding, I’ll still be checking you out. Your insight and humor three times a week is worth more than most. Have a great summer!

  9. Dang, Sherri beat me to the punch. You mean no daily Wimbleton toon? In the words of Chris Berman; “C’mon man”. First you tease us with daily toons and then want to pull back to three a week. You think you work in the White House or Congress or something? Sheesh.

Ok, I have to be nice. I did finally at least make honorable mention in the last caption contest. I actually agree with Harry. If you have the funds take a cruise. Or what the hell, come to south Louisiana and enjoy some wonderful gulf seafood (no the oil never impacted our seafood) and a cold adult beverage. I’ll find a way for you to meet Les Miles and tour Tiger Stadium. Not to mention the opportunity to enjoy our brisk heat index of only around 105-110 degrees!

    Michael
