Just another Brick in the Wall

Uncategorized

So a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. Or should I say deadline. I had to redraw my NCAA title game cartoon this morning after a very late night of drawing a cartoon last night ( I actually finished the first one about 3:30 am) Seems I missed the mark completely on the first one. I had what I refer to as a “Far Side” moment. That’s when you draw a very odd cartoon that no one understands but the guy who drew it. Which, last night, happened to be me. Gary Larson, the genius behind “the Far Side” had a few of those. Head scratchers, you know. One’s that you don’t quite “get”. Like this one…

So I decided to post both of mine here. You will only see the top one on ESPN.com. It’s so much better than the one below which had my editor rousing me out of bed at 7 with the words “I don’t get it”. The four most feared words in the English language for any cartoonist. Unless of course, you happen to be Gary Larson. So you tell me. What do YOU think the cartoon below means? This should be fun…

  1. Drew,

It looks like your commenting crew left you hanging a bit…

It looks like maybe the clock stuck 12 on Cinderella maybe or maybe Butler shot worse than most girls teams and that is why they are wearing a dress 🙂

  2. GMFO-

great cartoon drew. Sorry my pack of dogs did not win. I love the one about the last dance but the one with the bricks….ok Butler thrrew up a lot of bricks last night…got it! they were saying the game set college basketball bakc 20 years because it was so poorly played.

Butler will be back and if the Uconn coach doesn’t retire, they are probably coming back also.

Going out to enjoy the day.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. I love it, Drew! Butler was all excited, and in love with the idea of going to the prom with UConn. UConn, clearly wasn’t excited about it, in the sense that all Butler needed last year was a 2-pointer to win the title. UConn actually may have feared Butler for that reason. The punch lady represents the shock we all experienced with 1) Butler being in the finals, or 2) that they choked last night, and threw all of those bricks. Was it performance anxiety or that they peaked too soon in their play, we may never know. I think those of us who rooted for the underdog, expected more than they were able to give. I think they need some more obedience training before they are invited to the prom again. “Save the Last Dance,” Butler will be back.

By the way, Drew, I’m glad you found a great use for the bricks. I enjoy that cartoon as well!

For some reason, I’m humming Pink Floyd right now. lol

  4. First, I am with Peg, the title and art immediately had Pink Floyd going in my head, and wondering about whether I would get any pudding… I enjoyed the “Butler Brick Co.” name on the wheelbarrow.

Second, on the “I don’t get it ‘toon” are you saying “You dance with the one what brung ya”? sorry if I missed the quote… my Texan is a bit rusty. It makes sense that people are expressing shock a prom king is dancing with the dog “what brung him.”

Third, if all of the commenters to date are still missing the mark, I vote you send the original “I don’t get it toon” to the commenter who gets it. (I know… my vote + $2 gets a cup of Caribou’s finest).

  5. I always thought when I didn’t get Larson it was because I was dense, now I know that is not true. I would say the first cartoon is too smart for the average ESPN “reader.” Not that I know exactly what you are getting at, but I like Peg’s take. It was a bit of a dog of a game, but good for much discussion and debate as all sports fans love.
