Orange Squash’Um Special

I’ve always prided myself on remaining objective when I cover games. It’s part of the “journalists creed” when you draw or write stuff for newspapers. Stay unbiased. And above all, don’t EVER cheer or make a peep in the Pressbox. That’s the BIG No-No. I know I’ve alluded to my affection for the Saints, which I still maintain, but I could always justify that one because I don’t cover them directly.

Last night on a normally quiet night on facebook, my wall there began to gather some rather disrespectful comments from an overzealous Patriots fan. Now I’m all good with dissenting points of view and with someone pulling for their team, but this guy was so out and out mean to Broncos fans and readers of my cartoons that I felt compelled to draw this. Friday is Orange Friday in Colorado. Orange Squash’Um Friday, I dare say. So this goes out to all my readers and to every single Broncos fan who has ever donned Orange now or ever. Squash’Um!

  1. good morning from Omaha,

Bronco’s- Pats- the saturday night special!!!Its not the two teams that are going to make up the audience but the tebow crowd. Both the fans and the dissenters will be watching to see if the bronco’s with tebow can upset the hoodie and hoodie jr. the pats defense is no where near as good as pittsburghs. In the last game they gave up 167 yards on the ground in the first quarter. They made some adjustments on the d line and the bronco’s didn’t. There were also 3 turnovers in quick succession that had something to do with the final score. Its could be an “instant classic”. The bronco’s have to control the game and keep brady’s bunch off the field as much as possible.

I saw where some channel is showing the miss america pageant that same night at about the same time. It’ll be interesting to see the ratings between the two events next week.

Have a great weekend. Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Drew – this is good, and I’m going to share with all I know.

Yesterday, it was finally cold enough here in the Great Pacific Northwest to whip out my Broncos leather bomber jacket. The fact that it was displayed so prominently yesterday got one of my co-workers to believe that I was some fair weather fan. I’m thankful that some guys that I’ve worked with before made sure to set that doubting mustafa straight.

I hope you have a great weekend, and GO BRONCOS!!

  3. Another great one Drew. No secret for anyone that knows me that in addition to being an LSU Tiger fan (though a despondent one) I am also a Steelers fan. The Tide beat my Tigers and the Broncos beat my Steelers. No doubt about it for either game. Not sure if the Broncos can keep it going or not ,but I would love to see them beat the Pats. One of my most favorite games of all time was a few years ago when the Saints (my number two pro team) beat the absolute dog doo out of the Pats. They completely harassed, hit, and sacked Brady like I have never seen in any other game. I have always wished to see another team use the Saints’ defensive script for that game against him.

  4. Several years ago, I had the joy of attending my nephew’s youth hockey games. On occasion, I would get to attend a tournament. There is nothing better than watching grade school and junior high kids on the ice, playing for the love of the game, with the goal of getting a “W” at the end of three periods. Tournament time was special, though. Several games played over two days. The top three teams got medals, with the winning team also receiving a coveted trophy. The organizers of these events also gave out sportsmanship awards. I was so proud to witness my nephew’s team win that award, more than anything. It meant that to those boys, it wasn’t just about the game. It was about how they carried themselves on and off the ice.

I was reminded of that memory, because the Patriot’s fan from that particular thread on your Facebook page, Drew, needed to be benched. You did the right thing. He definitely deserved a 15-yard penalty and an ejection from the field. He was not exhibiting good sportsmanship – that is for sure. Thank you for always watching out for your fans and followers, Drew.

This cartoon brings back so many memories of the original “Orange Crush.” Guys I grew up with, watching Bronco football back in the day. All of the players from the late 60s and 70s, who paved the way for the players in the 80s, 90s, and today. The Broncos have such a rich tradition of never giving up in the face of adversity. This season is proof of that. Our wins may not have been pretty – but we won. The win against the Steelers was more than magical. Last night’s loss against the Pats was humbling. Through it all, the Broncos have stood strong and proud, and will continue to do so. As will their fans.
