Reality Check #1

“The Internet is the monster that ate reason, a thief in the night that turned loyalty to a 150-year profession into a homeless shadow of itself,” she said. “There needs to be a way to compensate cartoonists fairly or there will be no more comics.”

Julie Larson creator of the cartoon called the Dinette Set

I’m going to take a few more weeks of drawing 3 times a week here M-W-F. I still have more marketing to do and my Littoonz Studios website to work on. After drawing sports cartoons daily for 27 years it feels good to slow down just a bit from the daily grind and I do hope you will be patient as I get off the treadmill two days a week for a while. See you Monday!

  1. Drew,

Noticed that your January 20/21 panel (20th on your site, 21st on United Media’s site) still carried the NEA byline. Yours is the last comic to carry it, all other comics have switched to UFS.

    Any insight?

Regarding the Larson quote above – Here’s Mike Lynch:

“I think Julie’s wrong about this. There will always be comics, but more and more of them will be drawn by people like Mike Gioia, who has the fulltime job and the health coverage that allow him the luxury of creating a cartoon for free.” http://mikelynchcartoons.blogspot.com/

That still doesn’t bode well for the profession.

  2. D.D.,

Great pick up on the NEA in the signature block. I found out Wednesday that it’s been put back in the bullpen (probably something to do with the Newspaper Enterprise Association moniker sounding too “newspapery”). So from now on I’ll be using UFS on everything, which is great by me.

Thanks for the link to Lynch’s blog. I’ll take a look and continue to ponder. I appreciate it.
