Spring Training: Rocks wave goodbye to Tucson

Adios Tucson. It was fun while it lasted.

One of the perks I enjoyed during my years at the Rocky Mountain News were the nearly annual treks to Arizona I made to cover the Rockies during Spring Training. Tucson is a terrific town with a charm all its own and being at the ballpark on a sunny spring morning hearing the crack of bats and the sound of The Rascals “It’s a Beautiful Morning” wafting through the P.A. across the field will always be one of my life’s most cherished moments.

So now it’s your turn to experience it. Go ahead. Press play on the youtube video, close your eyes and imagine the dew of the freshly cut grass across the field sparkling before you like the diamond it is. Hear the hit of a Helton home run. Taste the first hot dog fresh off the grill. Feel the sun shining in your face as a new season with high hopes debuts and be Thankful for life. It’s always the simple things that make it so amazing. Happy Weekend And I’ll see ya back on Monday.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

Enjoy the view from the top of the pile. You Rockie fans have earned it. If 18 years is all it takes to find your way out of the wilderness of baseball, the Royals should be emerging from the forest soon. Its been 25 years since they last were in the world series and almost 20 years since they had a winning season. the fans in KC still keep showing up, bless them, and taking their lumps. The worm in KC will eventually turn, but it must be almost the anaconda of worms.

    Have a great weekend.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Glad to see the Rockies can still feel good about themselves. But the Giants are going to win the NL West.

  3. All is right with the world. Its spring, the birds are singing, the grass is getting green, and its baseball time. Even the beer and hot dogs will taste better now. Go Rockies greg

  4. Thanks Drew! The few times I got to spring training are nothing but great memories of sun, hotdogs, baseball, and good friends. Although my last, as it turns out, opportunity to see a game at Hi-Corbett was rained out! I did get to sit in the stands and drown for an hour or so, though. Bought hats and jackets to keep warm and dry, not 65 pairs of purple boxers, good times……good times.
