The Great Mistake?

Uncategorized

Hindsight is 20/20 they say. As Broncos fans try to recover from one of the the worst seasons in the history of the franchise, there is plenty of time to reflect. It’s easy to remember what used to be and wonder whether the changes of the last few years were necessary. Was it a mistake to fire Mike Shanahan in 2008? It seemed abrupt at the time but Shanahan’s magic had begun to disappear. Change is good. But it can also be a case of being careful what you wish for. The alternative could be worse. And clearly Josh McDaniels was. So we sit on the eve of the return of John Elway to a position in the franchise we have no idea he is competent to hold. But this much is sure. It can’t be any worse than what the last two seasons have wrought.

  1. Dear Mr. Litton,

As much as I liked Mr. Shanahan I still believe letting him go was the right thing to do even now. Maybe he wasn’t the genius we was labeledto be. After all look at his accomplishments post-Elway. No playof victories after Elway. several so-so seasons. Hasn’t exactly lit up the night sky in Washington where his biggest story has been the problems with Albert Haynesworth.

mr. Shanahan’s greatest accomplishment seemed to be knowing how to turn the ability of John Elway into a super bowl winning QB. Once that left so did his genius.

On a side note, two thoughts. #1 John Elway running things may not be a bad idea. After all he took the Colorado Crush Arena football team from expansion to Champions in a short amoutn of time. While not exactly the NFL that is still impressive. #2 Your recent cartoon about owners making their couches walk the plank is still fresh in my mind. Do you have some sort of fixations with priates (RRRRR Matey)?

    all the best

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

You can have too much of a good thing, and evidently Shanahan had overstayed his welcome. When Bowlen hired him there were no vows of for better for worse, for richer for poorer. It was a business decision that Bowlen made and the fans of the bronco’s have to live with the results.

Its the law of unintended consequences.

Elway is back on the big stage and just like when he hit the nfl 27 years ago its the start of a learning process being done in public. We will see the results, worts and all as he begins to rebuild the franchise. If his ability and determination on the field are any indication of his ability, the bronco’s will be back in about 2 years. so as they said in the movies “hold onto your seats, its going to be a bumpy ride”.(poor paraphrase)

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. he was fired for going 9-7. I’m sure right now Pat Bowlen would burn Greeley to the ground for a 9-7 record.

  4. Shanahan was/is pretty good offensive coach but when it came to player talent, he was could only get right about 33% of the time on a good day. Defensively he could not coach his way out of a wet paper bag, and could not settle on a defensive coordinator. He spent way too much money on free agent busts. When Bowlen wanted to reduce some of Shanahan’s power, maybe so he could focus on the offense, Shanahan would not budge thus leaving Bowlen with two options: let Shanahan run amuck with power or take back his team. Bowlen chose ‘his’ team.

There now appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel with Elway joining the organization. He learned some things running the Crush and hopefully he will be able to use that with the Broncos. Looks like the Broncos will have to take a few steps back before they can go forward. McDaniels certainly made a mess of things. One wonders what if anything lil’ Josh has learned.
