Sometimes you have to take a stand

I don’t expect this cartoon will endear me to the fans in Philadelphia any time soon but I had to take a stand on this topic.

Should Vick get a second chance? Sure. I’m all for second chances, but playing professional football while making millions isn’t a a second chance, it’s winning the lottery. I’d like to think playing football for millions is more of a privilege. Vick’s second chance should be something more along the lines of working at the humane society ,for $7.00 an hour, cleaning up after dogs. Dogs, much like the same ones he killed.

Should Michael Vick be able to return to the NFL?

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

what a great cartoon, succinct and to the point.

I saw a picture of a protestor in Philly whose sign said “hide your beagle, Vick is an Eagle.”

Save some ammo, he won’t play until October, if then.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. It’s a very odd predicament…And yes I have two dogs

1.) Michael Vick spent two years in Club Fed for the his dogfighting ring whereas Donte Stallworth went drunk driving and killed someone and gets 24 days in jail amongst other things. The NFL suspends Stallworth more than the state of Florida whereas Vick got more from the state vs. the NFL. In the end, is it because of the dogs, the gambling charges or the value of human life playing into the equation? Go figure

2.) I watched the 60 Minutes interview and I think Vick is upset that Vick was caught. I don’t think he’s insincere but I’m not sure if he learned his lesson and time will tell. And I guess we leave that to Tony Dungy (who is one of the good guys) to help with that.

3.) I think Goodell intervened at some point on many levels. The timing was appropriate for the contract signing. I was in Canton last week and I regret not finding and keeping the flier. (Off topic…We need to get one of your cartoon’s in the HOF Drew. They have a section.) However, it wasn’t going to directly effect the first pre-season game and he cannot suit up until mid-season either. The Eagles were about one of three teams Vick could have gone to that didn’t have massive turnover, some sort of drama in the off-season or consistently stable management to support that level of P.R. hit. The other two, New England or Pittsburgh.

4.) In any other profession he probably would be blacklisted but he is a professional athlete, he has remarkable talent and we tend to forgive/forget and win baby win mentality and how much of that is HIS fault. However, it doesn’t prevent us from booing him at football games either.

    It’s an odd situation…

  3. The Eagles signing Vick kind of ticks me off. For example, if the roles were reversed, and I did what Vick did. I’d still be looking for a minimum wage jobm with no luck. Nobody wants to hire ex-cons, unless they are a gifted athlete.

  4. One and a half years in jail is not enough to cure a malignant soul. His second chance should be what you suggested or sweeping a gym somewhere. If one of the other 99% of the NFL players had done something so outragious none of them could return to league and the owners would likely claim a moral high ground in not signing them. It is the moral comprimise when the financial return is considered. The Eagles may find that their decision is mitigated by the public uproar everywhere they go including Philadelphia. That is where they booed Santa Claus and did alot of other wierd stuff.

  5. Drew,

Have you made a cartoon for Leonard Little, Ray Lewis, or Dante Stallworth? If so, then I’m fine with this. If not…..well…..apparently dogs lives are more important then a person’s life (and thats walking a thin line).

Just sayin man. He did the time for his crime. The NFL is a business and the man has skills. Eagles chose him with the baggage and everything. I don’t like what Vick did (and yes I own a dog) but what more can the man do to prove he’s sorry. Yes, Vick is getting paid 1.6 million over 2 years…..but that significantly less then 130 million (that he had).

I love the people who are deciding exactly what he thinks and who he is. Why not give the guy a chance to right his wrongs. Aren’t you all glad you have been given second chances?

  6. Amen Phil, I just wonder if Vick had been one of the twenty best tax accountants in the country how many people who criticize him for being allowed to pay football would have hired him.

  7. I am not at all immunne to what Michael Vick did, its just that he served his time did what he was supposed to and ya know, I am EXCITED to see Vick return. I grew up in a rough neighborhood too and know what he was apart of. He said sorry, deal with it. Like it or not he is gonna be apart of the news and sportscenter and other national news. The wierd part is that most of the people that dont like him are still gonna watch him if he does good or not. Ratings are gonna go through the roof. Gotta go for now.

  8. Drew, with steroids and Michael Vick people love get all preachy. Just because he killed Fido doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. If doing time in a federal prison doesn’t justify a crime, what does? Imagine you committed a crime, your first reaction after you got out of jail would probably be to get back to normality by doing what you love and what you do best? What Vick considers normal is playing football. He did the time that was assigned to him, why shouldn’t he be allowed to play? If Drew Litton got arrested, would we say he should quit making cartoons? No, that would be goofy. Why is vick different? Sure, he could still be doing illegal things to dogs, but if he is then let him get caught again. But right now he’s getting flack for something that has been dealt with on the highest level.

  9. Do the Eagles play in Cleveland this year? I wonder how he’ll be treated in the Dawg Pound.

  10. wonder why they chose to give him anything other than the bare minimum. he should prove he can still be a decent person before getting a multi-million dollar contract.

  11. I will guarantee you one thing if Drew was making millions like Vick was he would have kept his nose clean and not given anybody a reason to arrest him in the first place.

  12. I’m so sick of people crapping on Mike Vick.

His actions were atrocious, no question

He paid DEARLY for his crimes (2 years in the joint, 10’s of MILLIONS of dollars lost etc.)

He has repented, he has turned it around. He worked EXTREMELY hard to get to the point where he is

Why doesn’t he deserve a second chance?

And where ARE the cartoons regarding Stallworth and Little? NO-WHERE!!!

This whole argument sucks…..leave him alone, he has paid, now let him resume his life

  13. At what point Drew does Michael Vick pay for his crimes?

When does his punishment end? He served TWO YEARS in prison please Drew tell me when you think Michael will earn forgiveness; cause I am growing very tired of people who won’t allow him to prove his remorse over what he did.

  14. Our priorities are very strange.

Dog fighting is a horrible, villainous crime which unfortunately is very common in southern states. Vick certainly took part in something that was immoral and frankly, just stupid. I think a reality check needs to come into play when we have professional athletics that have killed people while driving their vehicles drunk, beaten women repeatedly, and deliberately, viciously inflicted career ending injuries to other players on the field. Somehow none of those things bother us so much. What’s the deal?

He went to prison. Now he is returning to what he does for a living. He wasn’t a general laborer before, why would he become one now? He can accomplish far more speaking and being a representative for the Humane Society then scooping dog feces somewhere.

If being a “decent” person was a pre-requisite for being a professional athlete, our leagues would be much smaller.
