Thinking Baseball, it’s almost here

Uncategorized

It’s not often I get to do the deserted island thing. I always liked this drawing. I won’t be playing any fantasy baseball this year. Too many things I need to hustle on to pay the mortgage.

After two years and some change I finally got a definitive answer from the Denver Post about doing any freelance work for them. The answer was clear. No. Not Now. Not Ever. And so it goes. I can’t quite explain why, because, honestly, I don’t know. But I believe things happen for a reason. I really wanted some kind of response because, frankly, I needed closure. I needed to know where they stood. We talked right after the Rocky closed about freelancing for them. But they never really seemed serious about bringing me on board. They did no negotiating at any level, at any time. It’s disappointing, sure, because it would be a good print venue for local cartoons. But it’s simply time to move on. I’m going to pitch to several other places next week in hopes of landing a few more print venues (Philly and Dallas). So many papers have laid off their editorial cartoonists and so the market is tough. But I hafta keep knocking on doors.

I’m thinking about starting to custom design WordPress sites for people. It can be intimidating to build one even though there are themes available. The cost of building a website is enormous. People usually charge about $5000 to start and well over $50,000 for sites like the one the band Rush uses. I figure if I can offer people the chance to customize their WordPress site for $1000 or so, I might find some clients.

I promise I’ll get back to the comments when I can. It’s just been a busy time and the Caffeinated Schnauzer we have has been pretty sick. So I’ve a fair amount on my plate.

Thanks for reading everyone. And have a wonderful weekend.

  1. I still miss the Rocky!

they had the best Rockies coverage, the post is crap in comparison its all advertisements these days anyways.

  2. Good Morning from Omaha,

I don’t know what the Post is doing but I do know that in addition to raising their price to 2.75 on weekendsfor the sunday paper, the Omaha world herald is adding content as well. They have an excellent editorial cartoonist, Jeff Koterba, and they also have added a former writer for Jay Leno who has a daily column of satirical comments about the world and Omaha in particular. He started doing 1 column of one liners on Sunday in the sports section and after 18 months they decided he was worthy of daily exposure. Its called “breaking brad” and always makes me chuckle. I know its just an observation from a guy who doesn’t know the realm of newspapers and editors but its just a thought trying to help a guy out. It seems they are willing to give a guy a shot.

You know how much I loved the rocky. and closure, after my experiences, is a big door that we have to get through. good luck in dallas and philly. both cities have great papers but would benefit from your talents that would add to their contents.

we have 4 inches of snow on the ground this morning, so much for spring. No need getting out the snow blowers, it supposed to be in the 40’s come sunday.

Have a great weekend big guy. Put the pen down and enjoy some time to yourself and loved ones. and take care of that schnauzer. Mans best friend will always be there for you.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  3. I think it is an absolute shame for the Post to act as they did. I do not know why they would not add you into their coverage. After so many years of reading your cartoons throughout the years with the Rocky, they should be able to realize what you could bring to their paper. And for them to hang you out there waiting, without giving a definite answer seems unheard of, but I guess people today act a little different that when I was growing up. Have you given a thought to the papers in Ft. Colllins or Boulder? Maybe they would recognize your talents and have an opening for your contributions. Anyway, I am glad that your passion has brought you through all of this and that people can still enjoy your take on things.

I agree with Gene, put the pen down and enjoy the weekend, and take care of the puppy and realize there are people out there who still value your talent.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  4. I agree with Paul, I miss the Rocky too!

This confirms my opinion that the Post hasn’t a clue. Unfortunately, they’re the only game in town, if you want a paper.

Drew, another thought for local coverage might be Westword, don’t know if that would be a viable option, but it was a thought.

Sorry to hear the puppy is not feeling good. Take care of him and yourself. Enjoy the weekend, and remember, baseball season is only a week away! cj

  5. The Post’s loss is the people’s gain. I feel you are better off doing your own thing your way, with direct input from your viewing audience rather than some clueless editor. Continue to blaze your own trail.

  6. Happe weekend, Drew and the rest of you as well. Hope the dog gets better and it’s a beautiful sunrise tomorrow in Colorado!

  7. Drew,

When the good Lord closes a door, He opens a window to bigger and brighter opportunities. Could be Philly, could be Dallas, could be something you have yet to consider. It is out there, though. I feel it, and believe it, because I believe in you! Stay positive as you knock on all of the “proverbial” doors in your search. Who knows who will be on the other side.

As for this weekend, take care of your beloved caffeinated schnauzer. Take a walk, breathe in the fresh air, and take in all of the beauty around you. It does the soul good.

  8. Drew,

I am sorry the DP confirmed what we’ve known for many, many years… it stinks at making good decisions or understanding its readership. The Post’s poor decision is going to be another paper, or better, a syndicate’s gain. You’ve worked too hard, for too long to be the Post’s cartoonist. Your growth as an artist, cartoonist, writer, and businessman in the last two+ years has been phenomenal. It would be a demotion going back to just one paper.

I hope you had a great weekend with plenty of puppy therapy.

Bring on the regular season!!!! I think the 2007 basketball season is finally coming to an end, or it might be 2006’s. I lost track it has gone on so long.
