Sometimes we need a little break

Uncategorized

Inspired by my friend Gene, and drawn for this weeks Guadalupe County Communicator in Santa Rosa, New Mexico I offer it up for today a of perspective and a break from this crazy world of ours. I only wish I could take all of you on a little road trip to experience the sunsets found only in the American Southwest. They are enough to take your breath away. Something about the dust in the air, the wide open spaces and blazing sun sinking into the horizon is just something to behold. So today, take a break. Hug someone. Send a kind note or an e-mail to an old friend or family member. And catch a sunset. You’ll be better for it and your soul perhaps a bit more at peace.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

First thank you for the Kudo- and second, I think the world has gone crazy and sometimes we get caught up in it to the point where we miss the forest for the trees. You can’t turn off the world but you can limit the scope of damage it does to your life. Appreciate all the time you have with your loved ones. you never know when that time will end. there are so many diversions from all the world problems, thank you NCAA, but sometimes you just need to shut off the tube, the computer and the I pod and get outside.

I would love to see the sunsets of the southwest. I think they would have a hard time competing with the sunrise over Frisco, CO and Lake Dillon. Its so beautiful that my wife’s desktop uses it as a background. She was so mad I got her up at 5 or so to watch the sun come up but when she saw what I was talking about, she just had to have a picture of it.

I am starting to sound like one of those @%^%#$%^ Hippies that were around in the late 60’s. Either that or I have grown to appreciate the real beauty of the world.

Sometimes it takes a 2 x 4 to the head before you start to distinguish the important things in life from all the window dressing and distractions.

    Thanks to my pal drew.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. Here the red sky at night or in the morning is because of the smoke from the Indian Gulch fire west of Golden, so even a rosy sunset isn’t good news….

  3. There is a fire west of Golden? I better see if my bro and his house are ok. Thanks, Drew, for this moment and thoughts!

  4. Drew,

I’ve come to appreciate sunrises and sunsets…the moments of solitude and refreshment that they bring to life. Taking that first cup of coffee in the morning out on the deck overlooking a small Minnesota lake – breathing in the dawn of a new day – and as the sun sets, exhaling the weight of the world from my lungs with thanks, and a glass of wine to toast the day that was. That was a great nine months of renting a summer cabin with friends, in the off-season.

North Dakota sunrises and sunsets over fields of golden durham wheat, willowing in the breeze of a late summer day – with birdsong filling the broad expanse of prairie lands – are as much a gift, as the Santa Rosa sunset of your past, or Gene’s Frisco-Lake Dillon sunrises.

I just realized that I missed seeing the rising and setting of the sun today. For some reason, my day does not seem complete. I’m giving thanks, all the same. Tomorrow is a new day.
