Coming up short

It was a valiant effort. So Close and yet so far. That’s where USA soccer finds itself. Still not able to quite measure up to the rest of the worlds standard of championship soccer. How long it will take team USA to even the playing field is anyone’s guess. But at least the gap seems to be closing.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

There has been talk over the last I don’t know how many years that the US would be soon

catching the world in soccer. Even by importing Posh spices husband, the thrill of soccer is

still not tickling the toes of most Americans.

Their kids play the game in school and a bunch of them get really pretty good at it but, as in

hockey, there just isn’t enough scoring and the rules are a touch confusing.

Complain Complain, complain. That is all I seemingly ever do, even about things I don’t understand.

It is way to easy to do and i must stop.

I love the Idea of the new part of your sight. Sometimes the spark can be contagious in others

peoples minds as well. we all need that spark.

Strive for excellence, Nothing but your best.

  2. I am proud of the Americans run in the Confed Cup….that being said their 2nd half performance was nothing short of a disaster. Hopefully they will use the experience of this tourney to make a deep run in the 2010 World Cup.

  3. I watch my fair share of international soccer (I can’t seem to get into MLS), and I don’t know if the US team’s second half performance was as bad as Brazil’s second half performance was incredible. Certainly the intensity of the American side (save Landon Donovan) dropped some (Altidore all but disappeared), but the first goal by Fabiano in the 2nd half was the equivalent of the Manning to Tyree pass in the Super Bowl. The defender was there and all over him. He had less than a second to stop the ball, turn 180 degrees, and shoot, and he did it perfectly. You can’t stop that.

Overall, I was just glad to see the U.S. side make a game of it. The game stayed exciting from start to finish. All too often I’ve watched them go down 2-0 and then the other side plays keep away for 75 minutes. That’s nothing but boring.

  4. You can’t get into MLS? Watch the Seattle Sounders (3-0 winners over the Rapids) and their fans at Qwest Field, and you will be.

As for the Confederation Cup, USA soccer still has a ways to go, but no one will take them lightly anymore.

  5. Hey Drew,

Any chance of getting a copy of this.

Proudly and sometimes sadly, I must proclaim that “I am a soccer nerd”, I have played for 28 years in CO. The trouble with US soccer is lack of build-up, and switching fields. A very fine display of this is Brazil. However, with their play the last week the US has proven that they are a top 15 soccer country…sadly the top 5 are leaps and bounds above.

    Keep ’em coming and Thanks
