Memories of the Moon

Like many of you I have my own memories of the day that man first walked on the Moon. Where I was when those first steps were taken and even more of the craziness that came shortly before and after. Here are some of my favorite memories of that time.

1. The introduction of my favorite toy of all-time: Major Matt Mason, his super cool space crawler, and the even cooler Space Station. I got them for Christmas and was major league disappointed that the space crawler wouldn’t work . I later found out (years later) my dad and my brother had run the batteries down playing with it on Christmas eve.

2. That same Christmas I also got a Saturn 5 Model which, unfortunately, because of the complexity of the thing, never got built. That pretty much ended whatever dreams I had of becoming a rocket scientist. It also ended my belief in Santa Claus because he left the price tag on it (must have been too busy playing with the space crawler).

3. Baskin-Robbins Lunar Cheesecake Ice Cream. And Tang.

4, Those really weird looking tootsie roll things they sold kids as “space food”.

5. Texaco producing these really great cardboard Lunar Landers which I spent hours with in a sandpit close to home.

How about you? Got any memories of that time? Please share.

  1. I remember coming back from a canoe trip with the boy scouts and watching and waiting for amrstrong to get out of the lunar lander. It seemingly took for ever but I was 13 and everything good seems to take forever. that was a time of Johnny carson and Joey bishop talk shows and hours spent looking at the moon just wondering about stuff. Important or not, it was stuff.. why did it take so long for them to get out.

why did it seem so close but it took 3 days to get there…I wasn’t very smart then, most people would say that not much has changed, but my mind was active and wanted to learn

. I just didn’t have the patience and wanted to get to the answer, even before I knew the question.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. I or my sister weren’t even born then, I think my mom was still in HS or collage in Chicago or something like watching Ernie “Let’s Play Two” Banks and the Cubs in Wrigley Field with her best friend or something I forgot.
