NFL Now the MFL

Blame it on the campaign season. Or on global warming. Or on the pending labor stoppage the league is facing, which I think explains a lot but this years NFL season has been down right strange so far. Is this what parity looks like? We’re almost half way through the year and I still have no earthly idea who has the goods to win the Super Bowl. Nobody has emerged so far as THE team to watch. Instead we’ve been given a season of pretty mundane football. Don’t ya think?

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

welcome to parity in the NFL. In an attempt to give all fans something to root for, they have made all of the teams nothing special. Its nice to see the ‘boys on the ropes and the chargers struggle. Its also nice to see Detroit win a few games and St. louis hold its own again. The chiefs are looking like they might have found a formula to win a few games (luck plays a part) but there are still the Colts and Steelers.

Its kind of nice to think that maybe, just maybe the lack of a true front runner, makes it possible for your team to have a chance.

I had read where last weekend there were 4 games that were being blacked out by the league. KC and Buffalo, detroit and washington, cincinnati and miami were all supposed to be blacked out because the fans voted with their feet and didn’t fill the stadium. The price of tickets and the weak economy have forced fans to pick between the games and food for their families!

Sports is the sandbox of life, a diversion from the troubles that we face everyday. People have reset their priorities and have decided that Mediocre football isn’t worth the price of admission.

Maybe constriction of the league isn’t such a bad idea….

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

  2. I disagree…Underperforming juggernauts don’t make a disappointing season, and there is still a definite have and have-not divide. I understand if things look downright gloomy in Denver or (chortle) Dallas, but this is a league where anything can truly happen.

The Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Giants, Packers and Saints are all in playoff position, which isn’t far off from the preseason conventional wisdom. A few teams have unexpectedly hit the skids, and others have been exceeding expectations…it doesn’t make it a weak league, just weak predictions.

  3. Did any ever read the sequel to Dan Jenkins’ “Semi-Tough?” It was called “Life Its Ownself,” and one of the subplots was that the Players Association was having a tough time getting the owners to agree to their terms. So instead of going on strike, the players went “Dixie.” A Script Committee plotted out the entire season, making sure that no team went to the playoffs with better than a 9-7 record. Players made deliberate mistakes in order to keep the win-loss records balanced. In short, they gave the league what it always said it wanted; total parity.

I don’t think we’re seeing that playing out now. But considering the potential for a lockout next season over the CBA, plus all of the other crap the rich owners are trying to pull on the players, it’s sure looking a lot more plausible by the day.

  4. Personally I’ve gotten more pleasure out of the college games on Saturday, than I have the nfl. They’re much more exciting, higher scoring, and fast paced than the 3 and out nfl.

  5. I love a good conspiracy! But in the end, it must come down to human decisions, human effort, or lack of. New coaches who don’t know how to motivate or care to, money or lack of. Etc, etc.
